Valve cover breather grommet
Under the no question is too basic theory...
Got a new valve cover breather grommet. It is a solid piece with no slits, holes, etc. Is there a good strategy or method to open the grommet so that it will allow breathing function yet hopefully minimize the oil getting pushed/sucked out all over the valve covers? Cut a thin opening? Drill a number of holes? Previously, I have used baffled grommets with great success, but those will not fit this particular setup.

Can you post a pix of the grommet ? IF it is the design I am familiar with you just cut off the bottom to open it up,
Jim

The first thing to do is to confirm that if fits tight enough in the hole for it ( hole in the valve cover )to not need any sealer around it !
Most times I seal up the inside with formagasket just to be sure no oil weeps by.
