Laugh if you wish, but my daughter who has to hire these artsy 20 somethings says that is exactly how most of the interviews go. When she finally found someone she liked, they decided they really didn't like the job after 1 day and quit. Most of her hires don't last 6 months for a wide variety of reasons, but showing up on time is high on the list. It's a new world out there.

I get it, I'm 50 and started hiring in '94... yes, things have changed.

Funny but true. When she said she needed to take a mental health day, I would have responded "That would imply you have a brain."
I hired a temp from an agency a number of years back to perform basic office clerical duties and answer the phone.. I told her I needed contracts and documents filed between calls and showed her the contract and customer number coding and told her the files are here and arranged numerically by the reference number and by date within the files. I gave her a list of contacts whose calls she could forward directly to me, all others to be forwarded to voice mail. I asked "Do you have any questions?" She responded "Do you want me to answer the phone or file? I can't do both. Can you get another temp from the agency to do the filing for me?" I told her " Thank you for your most valuable contribution, you can leave now." She said "OK., what time should I start in the morning?" I just looked at her and said "Surprise me." She got up and left and I called the agency immediately and told them her services were no longer needed." Last edited by NeighborsComplaint; 10-10-2018 at 04:39 PM. |

another think that I am just starting to get wind of (FYI: I was born the year Elvis died);
Is the whole millenial deal of looking to the internet for facts - and then having an indignant attitude of knowing it all... A cousin of mine re-posted a quasti-holier than thou rant the other week, and I am still trying to figure out how, or if I can try to breathe some sense into him... But I fear to attempt it would only be a waste, because I am likely not in his ever dwindling sphere of influence...

it doesn't help thet you can find probably a dozen cintradicting web resources trying to tell you what age/birth range is waht group... it seems that the "generational" differences are more defined by a mentality; I have been made aware that many people my age and a decade younger cannot be paid to work; the work ethic isn't present. my boss's wife is HR in the local health union - some of the completely absurd stories of what her usual circumstances are plain old mind numbing...

I’m 34. I technically fall into the millennial category. The thought annoys me. But then I think the older generation can be completely nuts on the other end of the spectrum. I like to think I’m a nice reasonable medium.

I’ll be 43 this weekend and millennial bashing has become our favorite past time at work

Using 'lol' in a post about millennials seems ironic.

What's the difference between a gen Y and a Gen Z ? Just the capital Z ?

As hip as it is to bash my generation, just as many older fellows have problems with their work ethic too. Ive held a job since I was 16 and never needed a talking to about how to get to work on time.

He is what I would call an "Old soul". I work with a lot of kids that are young enough to be my Grand children and they are hard working and punctual. That vid show a comical extreme.

Ben that is very true- If you watch the movie ‘Reality Bites’ (came out in 94 when I graduated) you can see that they felt the same way about my generation... I think it’s just a cycle.

It is 100% a cycle. Youth having different priorities than the previous generation is not anything new.
