I have a guy that has a 428 that I can buy. I am only after the block crank oil pan and rods. Motor is apart. Basically the short block I’m after. He wants me to offer. Motor is 2 bolt main. What is motor worth. I don’t want to piss him off but I also don’t want to screw myself.

I believe all 1967 - 68 428s were 4-bolt main. It's probably got a 1968 cast date, but was manufactured for the 1969 model year.
I have a complete 1969 428 2-bolt short block assembly that was running when removed. After dismantling, I coated the bores and lifter galley with white lithium grease and wrapped it in plastic wrap to protect it from rust. I had it sold for $900, but shipping costs killed the deal. If it is nearby, take that into consideration on pricing. Shipping anything now days is pretty expensive. Mike |

I sold a 1969 2-bolt 428 block and crank for $700 several years ago. All standard never rebuilt.
This was to someone here on the forums who I considered to be a friend, he paid my reasonable asking price without haggling. ![]() He drove from AZ to So Cal in a 455 Le Mans to pick it up.

Most all blocks were drilled for 4-bolt caps at the factory because it was cheaper to drill them all during production.
Adds zero to the value of your 2-bolt 428 block.

If a 428 2-bolt short block assy sold for $700 several years ago, then one today should be going for at least $900.
The $500 sounds cheap, assuming the parts are in good shape. Has the block and crank been properly stored? What about nicking the crank during disassembly? I hate buying an engine that has been dismantled. I have a 1969 WF 4-bolt block that will need sleeves because of how it was taken apart. There were a couple of cylinders that had some rust in them and the motor was stuck. Somebody told the guy to drill holes into the head of the piston, then knock the head off from the bottom. He drilled holes into the piston right into the ring lands. The drill walked and nicked the side of the block, so now the block will require a couple of sleeves. I've also never seen a 428 block that wasn't drilled for 4-bolt main caps. |

I’m thinking block crank windage tray and oil pan probably no more than $1,000.00 especially being apart.

Offer $700 and pay a grand if you have to.
Even a couple hundred more if you’re tired of looking locally and don’t want to miss out.

I agree. I don’t want to go over $1,000.00. Around 700.00 is good. I can buy a forged crank for $1200.00. I have a good 0071 block +.040 already I could build. Probably get a cast crank for $600.00.

Where are you located? My 428 2-bolt is standard bore, never been apart, and was running when I brought it home. It has crank, rods, and pistons, possibly the windage tray. I junked the car, sold the heads for scrap metal, and put the rest on a shelf. That was mid-1980s or so.
$900 if interested. I'm in NC. |
