. Im in need of a good torque converter for my car. I have 73 GP with a 455 with edelbrock pontiac performer intake (#2156) performer RPM cam (#7157 specs are 231 in. and 240 exh. @ 050 / 303 in. and 320 ex advertised/ intake centerline @ 112.) headers and 750cfm q jet and 3.23 gears. I havent put the engine in the car yet, but from what I need, for hard positive launches, I will need a higher stall converter. Comp cams lists the same "basic" cam that I have, and says it needs a 2000 stall converter. Basically this car is street drivin fairly regularly. I would like to have a close to stock feeling with the new converter, but I need to be able to launch quickly. Im just looking for an all around good performer that would be well matched with my engine. I would rather stay away from custom builds...id like to go with off the shelf companies, like tci etc. THANKS!

There are no "free lunches" with torque converters. The 041 cam in the 455 will require at least 2500rpm stall speed, 3000rpm would be better. You will find that the "generic" stuff that will launch your 455 at an acceptable rpm and still be "tight" enough for reliable daily use will be difficult to find. The stall speed ratings by the big companies, TCI, B & M, etc is typically for whimpy small block designs. Did you ever wonder why many of them also note "not for use with big block engines"?

If you are trying to save some money and still get a good converter I would contact Hugh's. They make a pretty good 11" converter that will handle big block torque and not break the bank. They are not as efficient as custom units, like the Continental 10", but about half the price.....Cliff

If you would like something good on the street and the strip look at a switch pitch torque converter , like what buick or caddy used in the 60's you can really tell the difference when it kicks in. I don't know how familiar you are with the switch pitch theory so just in case you don't know
.The stators change angle as you accelerate creating more torque throughout your power band. You can hook it up to your th-400 or th-350 There are companies that sell everything you would need or if you can find a good junk yard you might find one.
