There is a lot of talk on the boards about dual exhausts with x-pipes, etc. But what are you all doing with late '70's exhausts that use a cat? Are you just removing the cats? Has anyone used a dual cat setup to X-pipe and dual mufflers on a 2nd gen Firebird?
Right now, I am running a single exhaust - y-pipe to Cat (higher flow than the original stock pellet type), single pipe to a Magnaflow transverse muffler and dual exit pipes. Would there be a noticeable benefit to coming off the cat with a Y-pipe to dual mufflers (as I believe was done on the T/A 400 engines in 78-79)? |

Most in our area are removing the catalytic converter. Inspection doesn't seem to be a problem.

rted,i'm running dual exhaust on my '81 bird, headers, twin hi-flow cats and flommaster df 40's,car has a 400 engine,i thought about not having the cats installed but went on and had them put on. car sounds nice but i want something more aggressive,so im thinking about switching to spintech pro street mufflers.

Put a regular 40 series on. The DFs kill the tone.

What we do is build a high flow Y pipe; hooked to a 3" cat; hooked to a 3" 2 chamber Flowmaster; hooked to your choice of exhaust tip (dumps, turn downs, rear 3" pipes out the back, etc.). This keeps it legal and really helps them to breath.
