New to the GM stuff so if someone could help I would appreciate it. I have 68 Bird 10bolt rear and want to know if there is way to tell which it is without total disassembly??? Seams to be that I get an unclear answer which it is???

This might help. I think it's a 8.2 rear.That's what is in my 69 GP/428 3.23 rear. The 8.5 are Corporate rears that started in 71. not sure though. Please help this guy & myself. I could sure use this info also.

If it's the original, it's an 8.2. Here's a pic that shows what a 8.5 loks like. it will have squared off bottoms.

Stock '67-69 8.2 Bird rears have bolt in axles with one access hole in the axle flange. Will have to remove rear tire & one brake drum to see this hole.
Not all 8.5's have the squared off "bottom", but an 8.5 Nova rear will, if stock, & bolted in a '67-69 Bird.

I have been told that it has to be a 8.2 as the 8.5 were only used by Chevy in 67 and 68. By the way my rear cover doesn't look like the above photo. In Summit and jegs they have a pic but refer to a 11" something or a 10" something measurement but I have no idea what they are talking about? The Ford stuff is so much easier. Thanks
