The weather the last few days here in Minnesota has been unbearably hot. 90+ degrees, with humidity. During this time, my T/A has been running kinda sluggish. Last night was the worst, heat-wise, and the T/A ran real sluggish. Dumb question, but has anybody else had heat-related problems like this? Could extreme heat make the car run sluggish??

Yeah, the car can MOVE, bitch!!!

Yes. If the jetting is not optimized for a warm/humid climate, it will be a bit sluggish.

I haven't had a problem with overheating since I replaced the radiator and reduced the fluid level in the overflow bottle. But I live in Phoenix, AZ where a radiator can boil just by parking the car out in the sun during the summer.

But the car runs fine during the summer and isn't any more sluggish than can be expected from that powerhouse Olds 403 they saddled it with at the factory. But that's a temporary problem with a solution in the works.....

You might be suffering a little vapor lock. You might try wrapping some insulation around the fuel line from the pump to the carb. Depending on your tuning skills, you might consider a fuel Jet/Rod change.

As you know, high ambient temperatures and high relative humidity help to raise the density altitude. In essence, Density Altitude is the altitude your car "thinks" it's at.

High temps make any given volume of air less dense. Thus, with any increase in temperature, you have fewer air molecules available to be used for combustion. So, no matter what, if the temps go up, your power goes down. Secondly, with the change in density of air per volume, you throw your fuel/air mixture all out of whack. With the air decreasing in density (acting like you're at a higher altitude -hence the term "high density altitude") and the fuel unchanged, you get a rich mixture. Ideally, with decreases in air density, you will match that with a decrease in fuel volume to keep the ideal mixture closer to ideal.

If you do not adjust the mixture, you not only lose power because of lower air density, you now take a second hit due to improper mixture. In other words, you can minimize your power loss by leaning your mixture the proper amount.

My 400 has been running very hot and got talked into an small plastic flex fan by buddy and it really got close to boiling over with that.Car does seem much slower when it heats up.We have also been in very hot weather lately. Other day car was hot and it was hot out and ran a 15.12 and then made run in morning when it was cooler out before car warmed up and got a 14.59.This is on my tazzo vpc but track results the other day were similar.
I have put in a 160 stat and no help. I have a few reaons for my high temps and here is steps taken to correct them. I just installed a 17 inch flex fan, that helped a bit and today am installing a heavy duty big block radiator, its modine rad cost around 200 US and also installing a 16 inch heavy duty hayden electric which will be used as a pusher fan.I also have already added redline water wetter supposed to drop temps 10 degrees with 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. Oh one more important thing.I have no air dam on my ta .I have a slightly damaged one to install off my parts ta and that is supposed to really help the cooling as think 79 to 81 are really bottom feeders for the rad,not sure about earlier years. So pretty sure all of the above today will keep it running cool as a cucumber.Bought a fixed fan temp control but may put a manual override on electric for the track so can run it with car off.I have stripped of my air conditioning and removed condenser from in front of the rad.A couple more things to do are add on tranny cooler and possibly add on oil cooler. I will get my 400 to run cooler yet.
