I did it the easy way.

Got a 15 year girl (my daughter, her car) Gave her a couple soda's, three days, a box of razor blades, a orbital sander and about 50 or so 80 grit sanding disks, some electricity and vise grips for the razor blade. Some safety instructions, a radio with her music and guess what.....

Three days later I had a shell of a 68 GTo HT down to bare metal. Man that was hard work for me

how long does it take to eat the paint?

Not long. It's pretty nasty stuff, as you'll find out if you get any on your skin.
I'd say it's ready to scrape the first layer in 8 to 10 minutes but if you have patience, longer is better.

It helps to cover the stripper coated areas with clear plastic immediately after applying the chemical. This prevents evaporation and speeds the reaction too.

Depending on paint thickness I will scrape with a razor and then hit it with 36grit and an 8" DA. It took 11 hours to strip a 70 Camaro in my shop that had been skim coated twice and had 4 paint jobs. From the top of the current paint to bare metal measured .065". Just a little thick

What about stripping an original hood decal, that has deteriated to the point where it is flaking off, and taking the paint with it?

Sand, scrape,strip or media blast?

I like to chemically strip because it's fast, doesn't make you sweat, and doesn't create a lot of dust. I buy a $3.00 bag of rags from Home Depot and a good pair of stripping gloves. I buy whatever stripper is on sale. They all seem to work. I can strip a quarter panel in about an hour and remove any remaining primer or bondo with the DA and 80 grit. It's probably my age but that grinder begins to feel like it weighs 100 lbs. after about 20 minutes. I'm going to try Fasteddy's plastic idea because evaporation is the biggest headache and waste of time. If you wait one minute too, long, you're applying more stripper.
