I had a broken spring, bent valve and now a lifter with a hole right through the bottom of it on my 74 455. It also rounded off the cam lobe where the bad lifter was also. I f any one has any info or similar problems like this any info would help. I have all new crane cam lifters, springs, and a cam on the way so any help to avoid a repeat would be nice.

I sure hope those crane springs are'nt their #99840-16 single springs.
If they are you may be in for a repeat of your current mess... Get some better springs,I recommend crower #68404-16 dual springs, they install at the stock height, require no machine work to fit,and are good to at least .550" lift, and are a much better spring compared to the crane single spring. I've had three of those crane single springs fail on my '72 GTO 455 H-O motor, luckily they were caught each time before any real damage occured, anyhow needless to say they were $#!*canned before they got a chance to fail again. And this was with the original 068 H-O cam and 1.5 rockers so they were nowhere near their max. lift figure. Use them at your own risk... |

You don't say how much valve lift you have. It could be coil binding the springs causing the breakage. I would also check your guide-to-retainer clearance.

EXH guides can bind when not setup by a Pontiac head expert.

Head shops will tend to put positive stem seals on Pontiac Heads! You NEVER run stem seals on Iron heads. If you are running stock valves with 2 grooves, then you install O-ring seals on exhaust, Nothing else!
