ok guys i had my 455 running for about 2 days before the tranny went south on me, i had this problem before i blew the tranny but found out the problem fixed it with a little tranny fluid. well i got the new tranny in and it just seems to get worse and worse. it has new stainless steel valves and new full bronze guides, and i'm wondering if it will lossin up or if i'm going to have problems with the intake valves sticking for ever. kinda worries me. today i pored a 1/2 a qt. of oil daown the carb and fixed it for a few mins but it started to miss again. any ideas?

Never, I repeat, NEVER pour oil down the carburetor or intake, regardless if engine is running or not. If this is a fresh rebuild, why not go back to the builder if something is not right?
Let's hear more about the problem. You say it is missing. Have you performed a compression check on all cylinders? This will tell you the "health" of the rings and/or valves. How about noise, is the valvetrain noisey? All the rockers/lifters making noise, or just one, or two, or three, etc.?

How do you know it is missing? My idle is quite rough and "seems" like it misses, (motor shakes a little), but drives smooth. A large duration cam can cause a rough idle, like a Ram Air IV...
Nozzle drip in the carb can cause it to seem like a miss.. What are your compression readings? Mine are all at ~165 cranking give or take a few pounds with a Ram Air IV cam and stock 1970 #12 heads.. |

ooooh, yeah. One thing an engine cannot do is compress a solid liquid. Equals bent rods or worse if you keep doing it. found that out with a jet ski after it submerged.

first i built the engine, it has a ram air 3 cam and idles pretty smooth when it's running right. and why not run any fuilds down the carb? i'm not putting enough fast enought to liquid lock it. i built the heads put them togeater so i know they are right i didn't do the guides but i did do the valve grind, set up the spings and everything. i put postive seals on the intake valves which i never do, i usaly use o-rings and umbrellas but the valves i have only have one ring on the end of the valve for the keeper.
i did have one of the rockers come off before so maybe it's coming loose again, like i said it's not hitting on one of them and the intake valve is staying open for alittle while and i'm getting a pop back thur the header on that side, i'll cheack the rockers in the morning and adjust them again, then check compression, i checked it before everything was right around 150 on all, so i'll cheack it again |

Using poly-locks I assume. Just make sure they aren't too tight. Adjusting the valves too tight will make it run rough by bleeding off compression, not providing a strong enough vacuum signal for the carb, etc.
Doesn't matter if you're pouring it in slow or fast, liquids do not compress, so why risk the chance that whatever you're pouring down the intake doesn't vaporize into a gaseous state before entering the cylinder? A R.A. III cam should idle very smooth all the time. How about some more details as to what is actually going on?

Question:
How can an intake valve hanging open for too long cause a "pop" out through the exhaust (ie - back through the header)?

...never had an intake valve hang, on the bench.
Had worries of EXH valves hanging....those will hang if they were binding on the bench.
