I have just started a renovation on my 69 GTO and want some opinions and advise how to do, shall I try to match the original, rather bad overspray, or should I do it a little bit nicer?

If your going for the gold then it has to have the all the factory os.
If you want it to be clean then it's your call.

I have seen some pix on "showcars" but they didn´t have overspray fx on the engine or in the trunk like an original car has.
I just want do the car so original as possible now when I have it frame off.

It's your car so restore it the way you want it. If you wan't to spray body color on the edges of the floor pan or the inside of the trunk go ahead. I have worked on Top Flight Corvettes and we would spray a small amount of body color on the edges of the floor boards. We would put overspray on the hood latches and hood latch and engine color on the exhaust manafolds and bell housing. I did not do any of that to my GTO's. I personally don't care for the overspray.

I have done some search for pix of "gold" cars but it seems that everyone of them are perfect, no misses, no overspray...
Here´s a pic from a 68 original car.
Have you seen a goldwinner that looked like this?

I have never seen a Gold winner or Top Flight look like that. It may be as they say "correct" but it looks like crap. Their are two ways to look at it. One is to assume that the worker did not do his best work and overspay is everywhere. The other way is to assume that the worker did his best work. I go with the best work side. Some have said that they would put black overspray on the front suspension and other areas. I have never seen this on any top show car. Why someone would do a full restoration and restore it as if a poor worker did it is beyond me. I restored my GTO's the way I like them, some might say over restored. I would much rather have that. If I ever sell them I'm sure they would sell faster and for more over restored.

I agree in every word. I think i´m going for some overspray but nice and tidy.
The best with this unrestored cars is that you can see what was painted first etc.

I am going to put the overspray on the valve covers as was done from the factory. The bell housings and exhaust manifolds on ponitacs were installed after the engine was painted though so they get no overspray ... the floorboards will get their share of overspray as well because that was how it was done.
I''l bet that if you got in a time machine and went to the Pontiac dealer in 1968 bought a GTO brought it back to the present and entered it in a high end GTO meet the damn thing wouldn't even place.... now that is SAD.

Just because people are over restoring their cars trying to 1 up the next guy does not mean their restoration is correct.

However, there is overspray, and OVERSPRAY.. and there was flash rusting on some parts before they even got assembled, and there was paint dabs and sloppy paint marks and chalk marks.

Crooked body lines, crooked fenders, etc are all a natural in a mass assembly process, but if you replicate what the factory did, your restoration efforts will not be rewarded.

I have a friend with a 68 GTO in a very good condition, never restored or messed with in any ways and I going to check his car how it was done.
But my trunk will look a bit better I think...

if i was going to put in all the countless hours and money into a factory resto, i would want to make it look better than factory.

i would avoid all and any overspray if possible. just my opinion.
