1. the big cam has trashed my vacuum so the brakes dont work well, i assume a canister will fix this if not i will need a vacuum pump.
2. it runs HOT about 205-210 added purple ice(like water wetter) no change, maybe i need two fans or maybe just a fresh engine breaking itself in, odd thing is it ran fine until i put in the therm stat, i guess that comes out in the morning. 3. the lights and turn signals are all screwed up thats not my area so that will go in the shop. so wish me luck silky58 p.s. the 462 made over 600 hp and over 600 ftpounds at the crank and over four at the wheels with a 3.55 rear end, that was a fun dyno the power curve is flat and it hit 145mph. |

Sweeeettt!!! Don't know what to tell ya about the cooling system that hasn't already been said other than did you put the T-stat in upright? Check the heating and cooling forum for a wealth of info about divider plate clearance, timing, fans, shrouds, etc. that might give insight as to why it's running a little toasty. 205-210 isn't bad, but I agree it could be better.

Some guy named Carnot said the 4-cycle engine will dissipate 27% (or more) heat relative to the shaft power output.
What type of Mechanical Fan do you have?

It's been my experience that the vacuum canisters don't work very well. You can do one of several things: Switch to Rhodes lifters (assuming it's a hydraulic cam...after all this is the street section) Switch to a smaller diameter power booster (like from a late 70's Firebird) Install an electric vacuum pump (many "luxury" cars like Buick and Cadillac had them in the 80's...I think the Chevy Cavalier even had them) Tell us more about your cam specs and just how much vacuum you're getting at idle? I had a roller in my T/A that barely produced 8" of vacuum at idle and the power brakes still worked. 2.) Tell us more about your cooling system. Even a stock 4-row radiator with a stock mechanical fan will be taxed with mild 455 build.

If you need a smaller booster I have one off my 80 turbo car that will probably work.
Brian, I dont know about a stock 4 core and mech fan being taxed with a mild 455....The only reason I say this is because my stock radiator is in such bad shape the radiator guy told me if he rodded it out it would destroy the radiator its so bad....I was using a mech fan with HD clutch and my car never gets over 185. same with the big alternator killing Ferd fan I now have. Maby he should check his thermostat to see if its opening at the desired temp...boil some water and toss it in and see what temp it opens at. Mike |

Checking the thermostat is a good idea. Regarding the stock cooling though,it's not hard to get 450-HP out of a 455, which the factory 4-row and mechanical fan were not designed to handle.

your turn signal light problem may be as simple as an engine to chasis ground, I had that happen to me many years ago after installing an engine in my car. One ground cable fixxed the problem.

update
1. the cannister helped but is not as good as i hoped for, i think a pump will be needed before i race it or go any faster than 45-50mph. 2. i am using one electric fan(a perma cool 14'' 1650 cfm) it only covers the middle half of the radiator so i guess i'll buy a second and put them side by side, (3300 cfm). the wiring turned out to be a bunch or hacked up wires some lookd green some had 5-6 cuts/crimps in them so i guted all of it out and ran new pieces of wire, that all works now. as for it hitting 145mph that was the top speed on the dyno i dought i will ever go that fast in the quarter mile. i now have a trans leak somewhere that i have to find and the cooling problem i hope will be corrected with the extra fan i'll get this week. silky58 |
