I received my PHS documentation and everything makes sense except column 77 on the car billing history. That column indicates the "Manifest Transmission Codes". The possible codes given are:

8 for 4-speed/close ratio;
J for Hydromatic (ex. 2bbl(803));
S for 3-speed manual;
W for 4-speed wide ratio;
X for Hydromatic (2bbl eng.(803))

I have a "P" for a code in column 77. The car came with an automatic. Anyone have a clue as to what "P" stands for? The car was one of the last 67's built--July 18. Is the code "P" a '68 code?

The only P code I see listed within the 67 codes is for a 3:90 rear.
The 68' Trans codes I have are all two letter. PT PX &/or PQ on autos

Contact PHS and see if they can offer an explaination for this code. I have a copy of another '67 Billing History card that also has a P in box 77. This card is dated 05/15/7.

I'll let you know what I find out from PHS. I'm wondering if there was a change in the hydromatic late in the '67 production year that led to the additional code.

I have the same thing on my billing sheet and would like to know what the P stands for. I also have a 67 GTO automatic and its an HO.

My 67 HO Automatic has J in box 77 and has the code PB followed by what I guess to be the trans serial number in th box above transmission unit number. It is my understanding from reading one of the restoration guides that the 67 had two models of the t400 transmissions that year. My car was early (build date 2nd week in dec 66).

I can dig up the section and try to give you the cliff notes if you think it would be helpful.

I just realized I also have the PHS docs for my donor car, also a 67 GTO HO. It was built mid 11 66 and has the J designation in box 77.

According to the restoration guide by Zazarine and Roberts, there were 3 models of the first T400 in early 67, the PS PT and PQ, at some point through the production year (Obviously sometime after 12/66 cause my trans is a PS)they went with a redesigned model PX which was engineered to handle the higher torque of the GTO 400 engine. Perhaps the PX Model is the source of the different code on the documents?

That makes sense. I emailed PHS last week with the question. I'll let you know when I hear back from them. Anyone out there have a letter besides "P" or "J" in box/column 77?

Gene--I think you're right about the where the changes in the coding came from. I don't think it's just coincidence that all the updated versions of the HD were coded PS,PT, PQ, and PX when the original code was J. I'm going to crawl under the car to see which of those I have. It's nice the way Zazarine and Roberts break it down by serial number ranges. This will be useful information when it comes time to rebuild the tranny since there are four different variations.

Bob...

While we're waiting for PHS to respond, I'll put in my 2 cents worth. First, I have a 67 HO with a May, 1967 invoice date. There is a "P" in the 77 slot. Second, on my PHS sheet, there is a "Trans Unit No." slot two rows up from 77. My trans has the PX prefix and the serial numbers. What's the trans prefix shown on your documentation?

Mine says PB. Gene has a "J" in box 77 but his Trans Unit No. starts with PB. Maybe the two aren't linked. I checked the tag on my trans and it says PX-67-27761, which is what identifies which trans you have as far as replacing parts. As Gene pointed out earlier, according to Zazarine/Roberts, "...late in the production year, the PS model was replaced by the PX, which was redesigned to complement the higher torque output in GTO engines." Then they quote Service Bulletin 67-I-76 which lists the different replacement part numbers for three trans parts that are different from the original PS.

Perhaps the "J" disappeared when the PX model trans came out? If Rons67HO, gtoric, and Keoni1978 all have PX transmissions, then we would have a little more evidence to support that theory.

Still haven't heard back from PHS.

My HO GTO has a build date of first week in march 67. I do have PX trans. Is this late enough in the year?

I guess it would have to be. We need more responses from 67 owners to piece together a timeline. It's amazing that they had four different transmissions (3 different part numbers) in one year. It sounds like maybe R&D kept working during the first production year for the TurboHD.

Not a 1967 owner, but have some documentation.

According to the 1967 Pontiac Quality Control Inspectors Guide:

Manifest code 5 ID code FC 3-speed manual
Manifest code W ID code FO 4-speed wide ratio
Manifest code 8 ID code FT 4-speed close ratio
Manifest code X ID code PT Auto 400-2bbl engine
Manifest code J ID code PS Auto 400-4bbl

DSIB 67-I-76 is dated 21 August 1967.

Hope this helps.

Jon.

That's interesting in that it still shows code "J" for the TurboHD. We're still trying to figure out why our billing sheets have a code "P" instead of "J". The PX replaced the PS tranny, although it appears the part number for the tranny stayed the same. We may never know for sure when or why the "P" exists, although it appears to be common. The date of that bulletin is obviously at the start of the 68 production year, so it would seem the last and final changes would be included in that document for '67.

Guess I need to amend my previous post, as it appears it can be misunderstood.

The Inspectors Guide which I have is an early (Sept 1966) date. I do not have a later Inspectors Guide for 1967. Since the DSIB (Dealer Service Information Bulletin) was previously mentioned, I also posted the date for it.

These are two different documents, with two different dates. Sorry for the confusion.

This information is also covered in the "power train" section of the Dealer Album; but again, I do not have the midyear update. Most dealers were not very efficient about updating these manuals.

Jon.
