I am new to the Poncho motor world. I have always heard that they are powerhouse motors, but i am working on my first one now. From what Johnta tells me, i have gathered that i have a 72 400 that is .030 over. I have performer rpm intake and 750 edelbrock carb. dont know what the cam is in it. i just picked up the motor (in a 81 camaro) recently and i am wondering what kind of performance i should expect. Will i need traction bars? Subframe connectors?

Kman: Let me welcome you to the PY BBS. You should find (and probably already have) how helpful the experts can be.

I would suggest gathering a bit more info. on the engine such as the head numbers. These are usually found between the center exhaust ports. Pontiac used the heads to control compression ratios.

Need teh number that is cast between the two center exhaust ports. The numbers you've given so far are jus date codes of when the heads were cast.

Kman: Brian is right about the codes, you're starting to learn the Pontiac language. Sometimes, the numbers in between the cylinders' exhaust ports are covered on the driver's side with an intake heat riser stove.

Also, I've found sometimes they are hard to read as they might (probably are) be rusty and obscured. Taking a bit of steel wool or even sandpaper and scuffing this area might make it easier to read.

The nice thing about a Pontiac is that the compression was adjusted up/down by use of different cylinder heads featuring smaller/larger combustion chambers. IMHO, Pontiacs run well "right out of the box" because their engineers took the time to factor many variables into their engine design and development.

Conversely, CH&$!Y products weren't as dialed from the factory and thus respond really well to aftermarket parts.

As to chassis tuning, how do you intend to use the car? Subframe connectors are almost always a good improvement to any F-Body. Traction bars may or may not be required, I would first spend the money on replacing ALL the rear suspension components to ensure proper function before bolting on a set of speedbump catchers.

thanx again for the tips guys. as for the use of the car, well......... right now (please dont kick me out of the poncho forum for this, its the way i bought the cars) the poncho motor is in a (gulp) camaro. 81 model. i have the 81 ttop bird that it came out of(not originally of course). I have to figure out how to file for a rebuilders title for the bird as the title has been lost. The bird will be a weekend cruiser, maybe occasionally taken to the 1/8 mile strip in town. The camaro will probly get a 383 for the strip. i would really like to have a 4 spd for the bird (just cuz i love rowin a shifter). Any idea how hard it is to install a clutch pedal in an originally auto car? and where can i pick up a 4 spd for a reasonable price?

That is the type of head (4X). 2.11/1.66 valves, "predecessor" (so to speak) to the 6X head.

Your heads were cast August 3rd and August 9th, 1972. Being that late in '72, you probably have a '73 400 engine (if the block casting code matches the head).

Hey! We like pissing off the Chevy crowd by dropping Pontiac engines into Camaro's chassis'.

alright, this may bother some of you, or it may make you real happy, but i am done with this poncho and the camaro. they are for sale! 600 bucks if you live somewhere close to ft. campbell ky it may interest you. i went to bring it home today and it isnt running the greatest, it has a headlight/tail light wiring problem, and it was spittin' oil out the dipstick tube. i am seriously done with it. i have taken on someone else's project, and it is starting to get old already. i need to get rid of this and find me something to drive so my wife can have her car back. so, if you are interested in buying it or have something cheap that runs you wanna trade, send me an email at [email protected]
