I launch around 1200-1600. A guy that's helping me out with different tips righ tnow from the forum says that if I stall the car as high as it will go without breaking the tires loose that it will stall 500-600rpm higher. Im going to try that. He also said to run 25-30lbs of air in the slicks and that will help my et also. How does that prosystems 800 work? How much did you pay?

What shocks did you run on the front prior to installing the 90/10s? What tires are you running ET streets right?

Ya, I thought for a while there that I wasn't going to get any responses but my good man GJN has helped me out quite a bit.
Bret, did the head deal go okay yesterday? Have a safe trip.

I don't hear any pinging but then again detonation is not always audible. What rpm are you launching at?

I would go 90/10 and see how much that helps you hook. I run cal-tracks and called them for the initial setting. You might try that with the slide a links. Make sure you make the intial adjustments (preload) with you in the car.

Slightly lean is not a big issue; however, you can burn a motor up if you are really running lean. Check the plugs and see what they look like and go to the Pontiac Dudes website and see how they compare to the posted pics. 84 square seems to be pretty healthy (rich). I run 76 to 78 front and 86 to 88 back (but, I also run a power valve).

My converter flashes around 3900-4100rpm at the track.

That's kind of good that it is running lean like that. That's even more tuning I can pull out of it when I run the car. I know what your talking about as far as painting a stripe on the side of the tire to see if it spins or not. I will have someone recording my launched when I go. My holley 750 is jetted with 84 squarejetted. Is 86's all the way around a decent move or should I step up to 88's? Timing was at 36 total. I think I might try 34,38 and maybe 40. What kind of 60ft will I need to get running 12.35 @ 110 with a 1.85 60ft to put me in the 11.99 range? Are high 1.6's out of the queation with what I have?

The shocks I ran prior were the stock shocks. I also run 28x12.5 et street slicks. What cam do you run? Do you run roller rockers? Distributor? What carb did you have on it before?

What kind 60ft will I need to produce to run an 11.99? How much better than a 1.85 will I need?

My 400 is a basic .030 over stock shortblock with trw pistons. Heads are ported 16's with ram air IV valves. I don't know what they flow. Edelbrock rpm intake, holley 750 vac. sec. and hedman 1 3/4 headers. The cam is a cheater cam like the super stock guys run . It is 258-264 @ .050 with .516 lift. I love the cam. Turbo 350 trans with a 10 inch 3800-4000 stall and the rear gear is a 3:42. I kept the 3:42's so I could still cruise on the highway. I drive the car very often. I also didn't make any jet changes when I ran. Not bad for a 400, huh?

I didn't remove the driveshaft when I installed the slide a links. Everything was torqued to the right specifications.

If you have access to a video camera have someone video the car during launch. Use shoe polish to make a couple of stripes on the tire the camera can see. Play it in a VCR that has slow motion and you will see if your spinning or not. I will try to take a picture of my tires to show you the footprint you should be after. What kind of burnout are you doing? Is the engine popping at 50? I would say it is a lean condition. Running rich will just foul your plugs up. When the engine is making this sound, turn the key off (obviously do this in a remote place with no traffic what so ever and plenty of room to slow down) and pull over and check the plugs. Pontaic Dude has a good tech article about reading plugs. This will tell you if you are lean or not.

I would shift at the same RPM. The engine will make peak power at the same spot regardless of what gear you are in (in my opinion). Plus, if you shift out of first gear faster you will lose the gear multiplication sooner. 1st has more multiplication than second which has more than third. But, you can always give it a try to see what happens. As far as short shifting, yes I did pick up. Originally, I shifted at 5k then 5.6k and then 5.3k and found 5.3k to be the best.

As far as how much you will improve, its really hard to say. If you are spinning the first 20' and are now hooking, you will run 2 tenths faster in the 60'. If you are spinning the first 10' and now hook you will pick up about a tenth. What RPM does your converter flash to during launch at the strip?

A lot of guys I know do it, run hard and turn the key off. Personally, I don't have the balls. I run it hard to 60 or so and pull over ASAP and kill the motor.

With as much stall as you are running, I think it is possible for you to trim a tenth to tenth and a half off your 60' (you might get even more). First, work on finding the right tire pressure to get the tires to feather to the edges. I bet your spinning pretty hard. Then adjust the slide a links, next put on the new carb. You may have to adjust the accelerator pump curcuit once you are hooking well. Then start playing with shift points/timing etc. Do one at a time or you don't know what worked. You can also take off your power steering belt and pick up a tenth.

Yes, I see how it could happen as far as binding. I am interested to see what you run. With the slide a links and and the tire pressure I think you will cut an easy tenth or two off your 60' (depending on how hard you are spinning now).

Hey Alvin, intresting to hear you got another opinion on that issue with the slide-a-links and that my thoughts were'nt entirely missplaced on the preload/pinion angle issue. Its nice to know that you found somebody who's experienced with those bars in particular as most all my personal experience was with either the cal-tracs,southside machine bars,or slapper bars.Hope you get it sorted out and runs as you hope.Keep us informed on how it works out.
