I just got a too good to pass up (crap, what can I sell?) deal on a new in the box TBI fuel injection system and an MSD 6A. So, as much as I like my speed demon 750 it's going back on the shelf.
So I start reading up on this and find out that the only way to let the EFI control the timing is to have a CD spark box and a crank trigger setup ($$$), OR, have a computer controlled HEI. SO, yeah, I could just plug in the MSD and continue to run with the mech/vac settings, but the idea of being able to tweak the timing with a couple keystrokes is just too cool to pass up. Anyone know if pontiac made a computer controlled HEI distributor before everthing went corporate? I'm guessing maybe the '81 301 turbo TA? Or are there any other tricks to make this happen? Just steal the ign module out of an hei for a chevy and put it in your pontiac dist. No one but you and the fence post will know the difference. Any v8 with electronic spark control will work. Grab the whole dist, that way you get the grommets and any misc clips, etc.

I haven't gotten my grimy fingers on one yet, but I would've guessed that there where more differences between the comp controlled vs non than just the module... if this turns out to be just that easy, I'm going to have to invent a way to email beer.

you'll have to get schematics to figure out which lead goes from the module to the ecm. a good place to start is a 90 tpi camaro. Look for the "large" dist. wiring. I believe you'll actually be looking for the wire that goes from the esc module to the dist. No beer required. That's the great thing about the forums. Everyone brings a little knowledge to bring the whole community up to speed. I think I might have some caddy manuals that used the chev motors. If you can't find any schematics, let me know.

Thanks for the tips, tininjun. At least I have a clear direction to start off on. The Holley ECM comes with the 4-wire plug to go straight into the connector on the large style HEI distributors, so as long as I can figure out how to wire the guts, I should be in good shape.
Anyone else done anything similar? Oh, my other question related to this system: how am I supposed to plumb a return line into the gas tank? Is there a sheetmetal fitting of some sort with just a regular 3/8" hose connector? I can't even find a new or repro tank for 1st gens that has a return line option. |

on a few of the sending units I've modified, I've used the vapor line for the return. I'm pretty sure first gen's don't have one. You can modify the filler tube in a similar fashion to how some oil pans are modified for an oil return line. Take a center punch and puncture a hole in the filler neck. Keep pounding it in a little more till you've opened it up enough to fit an 1/8 pipe tap in. Tap the sheetmetal tube for the pipe fitting and install a hose barb. Now slip your retuen hose over the barb. Or you could install a pipe to flare adapter and run steel line all the way(preffered method) This sounds pretty crude, but it works and saves you from welding on the tank. If you're planning on putting a sump in the tank and will be welding, then I'd put a fitting on top of the tank and call it a day.
Another note on the dist.; Be sure to lock out the advance mech. on the dist when you go to the computer controlled ign. I usually put a small weld on the plate to keep it from moving. You can then eliminate the weights,springs, and vac advance. |

I like the sounds of the filler neck method, although I'm a little leary of the hole punch technique. I might just fill 'er with water and drill. I'm going to clean out the tank and seal it while it's off the car anyways, don't want to plug up my new injectors...

Holley has a new Wide Band O2 add on with software that you can set an AFR and the computer helps tune itself also.

There's a LOT of info on the GM 7-pin module for DIY fuel injection.
You will want a distributor that has the SEVEN pin unit, NOT the 5-pin unit. You could probably stuff a seven pin module into a regular 4-pin distributor, but you'll have to disable the vacuum and centrifugal advance. Any Pontiac HEI after '81 should be suitable-I think. |

1981 Trams AM and similar 301 comp-cnotrolled HEI. Any V8 HEI in the mid-80 for such parts will graft into a regular Poncho HEI.
I just gots a FREE, running, 1983 Chevy 305...with computer controlled Q-Jet and HEI. Me thinking to pull that stuff out and junk the rest. HIS

The '67 FB 400 had a factory return line. I thought our host or one of the other vendors sold a repro? I have my original, but went a completely different route.
The WB02 is well worth it for tuning these EFI setups. Without it, you are in for a lot of trial and error.

I got an Accel billetproof distributor for free from a buddy who had fried the module in it (something has shorted out), so I pulled the vac advance and module out and ordered a 7-pin holley ignition module from summit - they're on special for $27 right now. I'll have to fab up a mount and a wiring harness, but I think it's going to come out pretty slick. I found a web page with some great info on the GM ignition modules and how to hook them up to the 'mega squirter II'...
