My 67 GTO bellhousing and trans are aluminum. Should they be finished paint or just cleaned up to the metal finish?

Ok, so I get my trans and bellhousing clean today. It looks good, but it just doesnt look new. The trans housing does, but not the tailshaft and the bellhousing. It kinda looks like it has black shady spots on it. How did it look when it was new? Im trying to decide if I should paint it or not. Ill post a pic if needed or if somebody has one Ill compare mine to it. Thanks

It always seems that the tailshaft housing never looks as good as the main case. -Jesse

I ended up having mine lightly glass beaded, and then cleared it. That was about 6 years ago and it still looks good.

I got so frustrated trying to get it looking right that when I sent my 67 tranny out to be rebuilt, I had them paint it black so it was low-matenience.

I took a air wire brushs to mine and primered (500 degree) it and painted it pontiac metalic blue. Looks good should hold up for a few years.

You can clean the case to look like fresh cast aluminum. Brush on naval jelly for aluminum and let it sit for awhile. The length of time will depend on how dirty the parts are. Don't let it sit for too long, or it will turn the aluminum black. After about 30 minutes hose the parts off and clean with a good brush. You may need a second application. Once you get the parts clean enough, apply a satin clear coat or send the parts out for a clear satin powdercoat.
