Schneids455, look like the upper right, Section A, of your manual page provides some information but I can see that they may be sort of confusing.
Can you also supply a side shot of the system on your car to show how well yours are tucked up? They look good but it is hard to tell from the rear and front shot how they are up.
Thanks for taking the time to take them and share them.
Tom

Tom, nice work on the system. What caught my eye was your floor jack. WOW! I need one. I guess it's a "shop" type jack.??? What brand, etc., is it? I currently have two jacks. One is a Sears aluminum. I love it. The other is an old steel Allied. Neither lift very high. I would love one like yours.

I've been emailing Bob Chumley and Tom Hand on and off for months about the transverse exhaust system.

I am more in favor of using the Dynomax crossflow muffler for my application. One of my concerns is the tail pipe with splitters. This is what is on my 79 TA as purchased new and I want to keep it. Has anyone installed the Pypes tail pipes with chrome splitters? How do they fit especially near the axle and rear tires. From what I saw of the picts above, the tail pipe is quite tight to the tires. Another inch of space would be better IMO.

Thanks for the pictures guys. It's the first time that I've got to see the production version system. Hard to believe that this started with a brainstorm from Tom Hand that took shape in my garage on Halloween of '04. The pictures that SD Bob posted show the installed tips spaced away from the hangers. On the prototype system I cut the tailpipes until the end of the chrome tips touched the hangers. The tips were then installed roughly parallel to the ground. I'm also glad to hear the positive feedback on the sound and performance. My '70 Formula should be up in Gretna, NE for the Pontiac Show. It would be great to see how some of the other new Pypes crossflow systems sound in comparison to mine. Thanks Chris for taking a chance and manufacturing and selling the new crossflow!

Good looking pictures. I too am curious about the splitters and how those could be fab'ed to work.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks guys and let me add we owe all of this to SDMan, Mr. Tom McQueen. Years ago, Tom was willing to send his only set of OEM SD pipes to a friend of ours for duplication. The new 2.5" versions of the SD pipes were combined with a specially made muffler and tested by our good friend Lloyd at BelleAir Auto in Texas. The second set ultimately was modifed and combined with an existing muffler and set up on Bob C's 70. Finally, these went off to PY for further testing and then, you have what we are seeing now. We all owe a thanks to these guys willing to trust we would not damage their pipes or cars

I suspect the splitters could be created or modifed to easily fit. I am not familiar with the real issue though. Is it their length/angle/size????

Tom, I'm not sure if there is an issue, I just haven't seen one to be able to discuss it intelligently. Clearance, angle, and location could be a problem but I don't know.

The existing pipe I have on my 79 TA is factory and not mandrel bent stuff. It's also a smaller 2.25" pipe. What I want is as close a replication of this as possible but mandrel bent (with shinny new chrome splitters).

Please note something very important on Scneids455 GM illustration he posted on page 9. The top of the muffler shell should end up being even with the hanger (at the top). In other words, there looks to be no more than about 1.5" to 2.0" between the top pipe entering or leaving the muffler and the rubber isolator. Any more than this and then the front pipes hang too low and the tailpipes aim up in the air and too much of them show from the side. Also, with the muffler in the correct location, looking at it from the rear, the lowest portion should be about 1.0" above the sway bar. If it looks even or is below, the muffler is too low and the pipes will all be too low and incorrectly angled.

Look closely below at the photo of Bob's 70. It was set up according to the GM manual. You can see how the muffler hangs in relation to the sway bar and you can see how much of the tip shows below the quarter panel and what angle it is when the muffler is at the right height. Scheids455 illustration reveals a lot of useful information .

Hope this additional information helps. It is always hard to anticipate what things can occur until the task at hand is started isn't it?

Been busy with the remodel on the daughters bedroom, I have yet to install the system on my '73.
Maybe next weekend I can get some time to myself and get the system in.

Hey Schneids455,
What size rear wheel/tire combo are you running, and what backspacing? I'm considering a 17"x9.5" with 5.5" backspace running a 275/40/R17. But based on your photo, it looks like I might have clearance issues. (My second option would be a 17"x8" with 4.75" backspace running a 245/45/R17) Any idea if this would clear the tailpipe, or if I could "make it work" on my 68 Camaro?

I sent this question to Pypes, but they couldn't say for sure, so I thought I would ask you guys for advice.

This is a great forum!!!

68 Driver,

I'm running 255/60-15s on stock 15x7 ralley II wheels. I'm not sure what the back spacing is on those wheels. I could guess, but I don't want to give you bad info. Maybe one of the other guys will chime in. All I know is that the tailpipe is pretty close with the wheel/tire set up that I have. No issues with the right side; it's just the left side that is quite close.

The back spacing on a stock 15" x 7" Ralley II is 4" It is a zero offset wheel. When measuring wheel width, the measurement is taken from bead seat to bead seat. When measuring offset, it is taken from the wheel mounting flange to the outside surface of the rim. The difference is typically a 1/2" per side.

I have a question about the crossflow system. I've already purchased it and received it (got in on the last day of the june pricing!). I got it with the racepro muffler.

I'm curious if anyone has heard this system with both the racepro, and one of the other aftermarket mufflers that would fit (i.e. the dynomax). I'm not schooled in exhaust theory or anything like that, but I noticed that the racepro muffler has many little "dents" pushed into the metal tube in the muffler to expose the exhaust to the sound-damping material. last time i checked, dynomax uses a smooth tube with lots and lots of holes in it. it seems like the dynomax might be quieter because it exposes the exhaust to more of the noise damping material in the muffler.

So, I was wondering if anyone had heard the system with both mufflers and could comment? This racepro looks very well made and would work fine, I just want to make sure I pick a muffler that fits my preferences best.

thanks!!
