Courtesy of Ron Wise, thanks Ron! Rudy helped us a bunch back in 1979.
This car ran low 8's in the mid 1970's. I dont know if it ever got into the 7's. Only Pontiac motor that had several teams run in Pro Stock. Lynn

Gotta love Rudy, He will be missed. The only guy I knew that used a RAV head as a doorstop for his shop!

Is the RA-V a legal head to use in NHRA Super Stock today?

The RA-V head is probably legal now for what is called Super Stock Modified. I would love to build that motor.
I talked to a guy in one of those classes with a small block...it is 281 cubic inches and makes 728HP. Since it is a HP verse weight class, I would definintely have to stay away from him! I would say somewhere around 370 to 390 cubic inches. Our old car at 3500lbs was too heavy, but the new Grand Am at 2700lbs would be way cool. Lynn

If Rudy ran low 8s in the mid 70s, he would have run away with the Pro stock field.
NHRA Pro Stock 1975 January Bob Glidden in Pro Stock (8.81 and 154.90 mph). April Bill Jenkins and his Pro Stock Vega 8.73 at 159.10 mph December Bob Glidden in Pro Stock (8.72 and 156.25 mph). What am I missing here? |

Blown,
First time I saw this car was 1978 in a magazine. My friend on the east coast used to travel with him. You got any records for 1978? Maybe Ron can help us out here. Here is Rudy's 63 Tempest! If anyone knows where this car is please advise.

Hello Everyone,
I am really honored to see my Fathers beloved Astre with the RAV Motor posted here. I was brought to tears. That's Rudy, bottom right in the hat. Jess Tyree has helped me tremendously with all of Rudy's engines & car parts, trying to sell them for me. Unfortunately, I have already sold all of the RAV stuff, except for exhast gaskets. Got lots of those..... I still have the Astre, but have not been able to bring myself to go to the races yet..... Jess asked me if I would mind him talking to NHRA, and perhaps display the car at the NHRA Museum in Pomona. I could not believe it!! What an honor!!! So I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping they will accept the car. Thank you Wade, Ron, Lynn, and Tom S. for remembering Rudy and his contribution to the Pontiac racing world. Joelan Diephuis-Dunkel (Rudy's Daughter)

Lynn,
The car is at Jess Tyrees. He is doing some modifications to it to get it to certify. Since Rudy passed in '02, the car is now outdated. FYI to Blown Nitro Pontiac: Rudy actually ran Pro Stock in 1978 in Bakersfield. I don't know what his times were, but I know he made the field. If it were not for his incredible wheel stand at the starting line, he probably would have made it to the 2nd round.
