My 1976 Trans Am currently has a 400 and a TH400 and 3.23 gears. It is Cameo White with black deluxe interior. It came with the AM/FM Stereo and 8-track tape player (which both work). I currently have a Pioneer CD player in the dash, but have kept the original radio. It has power windows and tilt steering. I've repainted it w/a base coat/clear coat and it only had very minor rust in the bottom rear 1/4's when I got it two years ago which is pretty amazing considering that it is an original Michigan car. I've currently run a best of 14.6 @ 96mph, but I'm building a 455 for it and am hoping to put a 200R4 overdrive transmission in it this summer. You can read about my 455 build up in the Drivetrain section of the bulliten board. I am currently working on a web site w/source information on 69-79 Trans Ams at http://www.transamsource.net (very incomplete at this time) that will eventually outline the buildup of my motor, have pics of my car, have stats, etc. etc.

Let's hear who else on this board has 74-76 Birds!!

Later,

I also have a 1976 Trans Am. It's a Firethorn Red 455 4 speed car which has been restored to factory appearance. The 1970 YH 455 has been bored, stroked, deck, balanced and fitted with TRW forged flat tops on stock rods. The heads are ported and milled 4Xs with Ferrea 2.11/1.77" stainless valves and 1.6 full roller rockers from Nunzi. The camshaft is a Nunzi 2042HL rated at 235/[email protected] with .490/.500" lift with the 1.6 rockers. Induction consists of a rejetted 1971 455 HO 800cfm Q-jet and a 1972 455 HO aluminum intake. The exhaust is handled by repro RA d-port manifolds hogged to 2 1/2" with 2 1/4" pipes with 3 chamber Flowmaster true duals. On its first time out, the car ran a traction limited best of [email protected] with 60ft of 2.347. A Torque Tech 2 1/2" system, 2 chamber DeltaFlow Flowmasters and 1974 chrome exhaust extensions will be added within the next month. The cars can be seen at: http://www.geocities.com/rotella31/TransAm.html

I don't own a 'Bird, mine's a '70 Pontiac 400 powered '39 Pontiac Coupe, however a guy we cruise with is the original owner of a '76 455 TA that just turned 5,000 miles!!! He said he bought it and put it in storage after driving it a few months because he said that it was the last year for 455 Birds. The paint appears to be a copper color with matching interior. The engine compartment needs some cleaning up, but other than that the car is perfect. The engine is a wierd teal color. Does anyone know where he can get matching paint? Any help is appreciated.

dwbrenner:

The original engine paint color on mid 70's Pontiac V8's is Olds metallic blue which was used in the late 60's and early 70's.

Hope this helps,
Lloyd

Thanx Lloyd, I'll let him know.

I drive a 1974 Super Duty Trans Am. It's cameo white with a blue vinyl top. Blue interior. The motor is .030 over, TRW forged, SD crank, SD rods, Total Seal rings, SD caps, SD oil pump, street fill of hard block, SD heads (uncut except for minor clean up and polish of exhaust runners), Ferrea valves, RPM intake, SD carb, Hooker Super Comp headers, Performance Distributors HEI, Torque Tech 3" exhaust, Mallory 140gph fuel pump. Stock rear end with 3:08 gears. Subframe connectors have been welded in. Best time is currently a 13.00 but that was before the fuel pump. The car was running out of gas at the 2-3 shift. Hope to improve that now with the new fuel pump. Time to go to the track!!!

I have a 1975 Trans Am. It's a Red 455 with a switch pitch TH400. The 1973 XL 455 has been bored .040 over, balanced with TRW forged pistons on stock rods. The bottom end gets ARP bolts and studs. The heads are ported and milled 6Xs with 2.11/1.77" stainless valves and 1.5 Crower roller rockers. The camshaft is a Custome Lazer 248/[email protected] .592/.604" @108LSA. Induction consists of a seperated Torker II (from the water crossover) and a BG850DP. The exhaust is handled by Hooker Super Comps into 3" pipes w/balance and 3" Warlock mufflers with dual factory tips. On its first time out, the car ran a best of 12.93@105mph with 60ft of 1.86 on BFG TA Radials. Check http://www.pontiaconline.com/members/32 for updates. Not too shabby for a 3900lb. car.

I have a 1974 Super Duty Trans Am. The engine is however only a 1973 XE 455 with 4X heads. The rest of the car is all stock and in good condition.

I'm a little late getting into this thread, but I figured to add another post, especially since I saw Critter's post (it's dave u. from poncho).

I've got a 76 455 T/A that I've owned since 94. It's seen some changes over the years, but it's still in primer. The 455 had 5K on a rebuild when I bought it so only the top end has seen any work. Currently the engine has ported 96 heads, an Ultradyne cam, Performer RPM intake, a home built 73 Buick 800 cfm quadrajet, headers and a Flowmaster exhaust. I've had custom springs made front and rear and the car is approximately 3 inches lower than factory specs for the 76s. This may sound sorta rice, but it sits pretty close to a 70 'bird stance, which is what I wanted. I also added subframe connectors, poly bushings and I forget the rest. Best time at the track is 13.965 (IIRC)@ 100 mph on the stock heads before they were ported. Since then I'm up to 102 mph but can't break into the 13s. A trip to the dyno showed I was putting down 350 ft-lbs at 1500 rpm so the cam centerline had to change. I moved the cam a bit and replaced the Holley with the current quadrajet and last run on the dyno was 320 hp and 400 ft-lbs at the rear wheels, with a big vacuum leak. I refuse to go back to the track till the 3.08s are replaced with 3.42s since the ST-10 is my current weak link. Hope to get some better numbers soon.

Dave

Talkin about late to a post but whatever... I drive a 3700lb 74 Firebird with a supercharged 455, #614 heads & an Isky solid. Best mph so far is 148 with the ET slow at 9.37. I've had this car for 16yrs taking it from a 350ci stocker through the 13's, 12's, 11's, 10's, 9's & now with luck into the 8's all while maintaining varying degrees of streetability. Obviously it's a bit less streetable now than it was in 13sec trim, but it's still licensed, has a full interior and is still driven.

75 esprit, 71YH 455 bored .040 and stroked .040 with 6.8" eagle rods and ross domed pistons for a compression ratio of 13.2 to 1. 72cc Edelbrock heads with a race port and a pretty big solid roller cam, intake is a race ported warrior with a 1050hp (8896). I have hooker supercomp headers.

The transmission is a t-400 with a 8" tci 300+ race convertor. I have a transbrake (that I hardly ever use). The car's race weight is 3520 and has a ford 9" in the rear that was purchased from moser engineering with 35 spline axles and a aluminum center section with a spool and 3:89 gears. On the rearend I have a set of MT drag ets that are 29.5 x 10.5/15. The best et out of the car so far is 10.09 @133.05. Since then I have knocked 2 tenths off of my 660, so I feel confident that I am running in the 9.70-9.80 range. I have also just sent my carb to pro-systems and had them modify it, they told me another 20-30 hp so I'm am sure I will have a 9 second time slip this coming summer. Well that is all I can think of right now if I remember anything else I will write back in.

I have a 76 T/A I bought when I was 17,its an all numbers matching 455 4spd car black on black coupe, deluxe interior package,am/fm with 8-track and even got a case of old 8-tracks, power windows, console,a/c, tilt, rear defrost, and ralley II wheels with original spare&jack. The car was in a farmers machine shed for 10 years when I bought it off him without a spec of rust and only 32000 original miles, and now the bird only has 37000 miles on it.
