Took the 74 455 TA out since were are finally starting to thaw and noticed a backfiring through the exhaust. Suspecting a valvetrain problem, I pulled the valve covers and found loose rockers on cylinder #6. To make matters worse, there is no pushrod on the exhaust side.
Next week I'll be tearing it down, but until then where in the world could the pushrod go? I haven't changed the oil since I got the TA home, but I'm scared it was chewed up and now I'm looking at biulding the motor again. Any thoughts are appreciated... Trumpeter |

Well, I guess the lifter/lobe could have been eaten and the pushrod either laying in the valley or slid down into the crankcase. Hard to imagine this without some serious racket coming from the engine bay.

I had this happen on my 400 right after my rebuild 6 years ago. Had a piece of rust stick a needle open and hydralic the motor, bend a push rod and chewed it up. I fished 4 of the 5 pieces out of the oil pan with a magnetic telescope. Found the 5th when I rebuilt the motor last year.

It could be laying in the valley under the valley pan. If you have one of those magnet-on-a-stick things, you could put it down through the pushrod hole in the head and fish around a little.

Maybe all is not lost. I'll get the intake and valley pan off and update everyone.

Maybe the case of nut shrinkage is what caused the push rod to fall off????

i toasted a 462 on a freeway on ramp and went back to the scene after gettig the car towed and found one of my pushrods on the street a long with pieces of my mini starter...
