Hi all, just sold my '68 and just found the Body Broadcast copy under the seat while cleaning out the car, according to the info I have, FF was a Muncie for V-8's only. The car now has a 230 Chevy and Powerglide but the clutch pedal set-up is still there. I would gladly contact PHS to find out but the new owner is going to put a 400 and M-20 in it. Anyone know if you could order an M-20 for a 2bbl OHC 250?
Thanks, John Judge: "Well Sir, I have reviewed this case and I've decided to give your wife $775 a week." Husband: "That's fair, your honor. I'll try to send her a few bucks myself."

The OHC 6 could be ordered with either the 3spd Saginaw, or ST300 auto in 1bbl form. Only the 4bbl "Sprint Option" could be ordered with a 4spd, Saginaw.(I have an original 67 Sprint/4spd Saginaw) No muncies were offered with the OHC 6 to my knowledge, only the V-8s. No 2bbl was offered on the OHC 6......

Actually, there was a Muncie in my Dad's 69 LeMans Sprint convertible. I thought it was a fluke, but the 1969 Pontiac Service Manual and other sources confirm that it was correct.
And the statement that four-speeds were not available with the base OHC6 one-barrel is incorrect. I am looking at the 1969 powertrain charts in the Sales Manual, and it clearly states code FH M20 is available with engine 341 (the base OHC6). It would have a 3.55 axle without AC, and a 3.23 with AC. But you're right about Firebirds getting a Saginaw. The 67's with 230 inch engine got a 3.11 first gear, and the 68-69 with the 250 engines got a 2.85 first gear. I do know, however, that the 1969 service manual lists the 3.11, but is in error. Other sources give the 2.85 as correct and that's what they came with. Glenn Uettwiller http://home.earthlink.net/~birdman8/index.html "I'm an atheist before my first cup of coffee." - Chuck Colson |

My well-documented 69 4Spd Sprint Firebird has the Saginaw with 3.11 first gear, and HURST Competition Plus shifter... and the cast iron damper weight hung on the trans tail.
Was was not clear was the 3.55 vs 390 rear gearset...and axle pedegree. Clearly had the 4-pinion Limited Slip. You currently own a 1969 Sprint Firebird? I didn't know that.
I may be in your neighborhood soon for a visit. I'd LOVE to see that car! I will have to do further research on the 3.11 vs 2.85 first gear issue. Did you have the transmission out, or how did you measure the ratio? Mine was originally a three-speed. Maybe that was a 2.85 first gear... Glenn,
Thanks for setting me straight! I am still learning about the OHC 6 equipped cars, including my 67 F/B Sprint/4spd Convertible w/ 3.55 Safe-T-Track.(mine has the weight and 3.11 ratio also) Stud, I would like to see some pix of the 69 Sprint/4spd. I understand that it is the 230 HP version! |

Sprint Bird, I have to agree with Glen, My 69 sprint 4-speed firebird, and the 69 tempest sprint 4-speed I used to own both had saginaw's with the counterwieght on the tailshaft & 3.11 first gears. I have never hears of a OHC-6 with a muncie, but I have learned never to rule anything out. My 69 firebird is always marked down at shows for having a 400 front bumper and emblem, even though I have the original dealer invoice showing that the original owner had the dealer intall it.

Jeff, the 69 Service Manual states very clearly that a Muncie was used for all 69 Tempest OHC6 cars, while the Saginaw was for Firebirds. This aligns with the 69 LeMans Sprint Convertible my Dad had 20+ years ago, which had the original transmission, a Muncie. Your 69 Tempest should have been a Muncie. The 68 T6 got the Saginaw 2.85 according to the parts book.
Also, while the Service Manual for 69 states the Saginaw was a 3.11 first gear unit, I recalled that it was in error. I don't have a 68 SM handy but the July 1969 parts book states that the 67 F6 got a Saginaw 3.11, and the 68-69 F6 got a Saginaw 2.85. All the 230 inch OHC's got the Saginaw with 3.11 first gear. Glen as usual you are probebly correct. It was 20+ years ago that the tempest rotted out for the 3rd & last time. And that could explain were that mucie came from that I sold several years ago.
Thanks for the input Jeff |
