Hello
I just bought a 68 ram air gto. I was wondering how I could trace the cars former owners as I suspect that this car was once raced as I guess alot of them were at one time or another.I have spoken to the owners dating back to 91.

Start with PHS and find out where the car was originally sold then contact that state with the vin number.

You used to be able to send the VIN off to the main DMV office in Jefferson City Missouri and they could do a search of the last Owner off a certain vehicle or do a complete list of all the Owners...now we have a Privacy Law and you can no longer do this.Depends on the laws in each State now,you may get lucky, ask your local DMV in your State...! Good Luck on your search Ed

I really doubt that you will have much luck unless you have a friend who's a cop or know someone at the DMV.
I found an old envelope in the trunk of my 68 that had a name and address on it. I looked up the guy and found out that he was the owner of the car before the guy from whom I purchased it. Before that it was a one owner. The guy from the envelope gave me a lot of info on the car and answered a lot of my questions. IT was pure luck that I found him since the DMV won't give you ANY info these days.
One friend of mine went into the DMV and told them that he found a wedding ring in a car that he was restoring (bullsh*t story) and wanted to contact the previous owners of the car to try to find the ring's owner. They shut him down and told him to keep the ring.

The whole DMV lookup of previous owners got shut down when that actress was murdered a bunch of years ago by a fan/stalker that got her address from a DMV lookup.

I tried the DMV thing and got shutdown. There needs to be some way to look up previous owners of these antique cars,so we could get some history of it and I`m sure they`d like to know that their first car is still on the road or in the process of being restored.

This is not available in all states:

I have not used this but it might be worth a try.

That`s a pretty cool site but that can only find current owners not original owners.
