Jennifer, the first box at the top will give you specs on stock Pontiac engines. The next box below you will note the different bore/stroke combos with corresponding cubic inches. Bore x stroke will give you the your CID.

For a 400, you will need to go with longer rods, different pistons, and either have a 455 crank ground to accept a smaller rod dia. and have the mains machined down to the smaller 3" journal size of the 400 Pontiac, or there are complete kits out there to just drop in your 400/455 Pontiac. Check out PDudes whole sight, there's lots of info. there.

Doug - you do not have to go to longer rods with a 400 to make a stroker motor... the 455 and 400 use the same rod length. The only time you change rod lengths is when you go to a custom piston and you want more rod length - shorter piston to change the rod angle in the block.

Jennifer - a 400 block will make almost every configuration you saw on the other page. It can be a 455 if you turn a 455 crank mains down to 3" from 3.25" and use a Dudes shim kit on the thrust bearing and bore it .030 over and use the standard bore 455 piston ( .030 over 400 is same bore as standard 455). As doug said they also make kits that usually require a balance to drop in to make different cid's out of your 400 engine. These already have the crank, rods, and pistons that you need but are fairly pricey if you are on a budget.

Jen, I know you would like to build your own car and all. I understand that there is a respect factor that goes along with that. I know that being a lady in a man's game is not always easy. I also know that buying a car like Brian Baker's is a great idea. It will get you to your goals MUCH quicker and cheaper. For the money you will save, you could also have a nice, enclosed air conditioned trailer for your car. Shoot, I've tried to get Brian to swap me his 79 for my 69 Bird more than once. His car is MUCH more complete than mine. Besides, if you install the engine and driveline, do the bodywork and prep it for your own paint scheme, isn't that enough?

Get out and race, life is short. Enjoy yourself. You don't have to prove nuthin' to nobody just because you're female. If you want to build your own car to please yourself, go for it. But don't buy into the whole "if I didn't do all the work myself it's not really my car" thing. Everyone has talents and limitations. I know some VERY skillful builders and mechanics and there's always something somewhere that gets contracted out (final paint, narrowing the rear end, chassis work, etc.)

I support my husband 100% in our racing program. I freely admit that any seat time I get I owe to him. I may not be the best mechanic, nor do I want to be, nor do I have to be (and we all thank God for that. ) I have no problem giving my Tom all the recognition he deserves. Nor does he get testy if my lights are consistently better than his. It's all teamwork, it's all about OUR racing program. Not his, not mine. Ours. Any troubles we have we share between us and any joy we have is doubled.

What do you mean who is Mongo? I am lost but thanks for the inspiration. I appricaite it i mean any woman helping me out in this industry is great. I dont have a race team it is just me lol... So it is all my work.. i am hoping to get to put together a team eventually but we will see what happens in the future.

Dear Jen, sounds like you've got your priorities straight. Brian Baker, aka Mongo, is in Maryland and has a solid rolling chassis for sale.

I think most of the guys here would agree with me that it's much easier to do 20 cars than to find the right "team", lol.

Why do you have to have a 455?

LOL! Seriously. I finally got the chassis certification last week, it's good to 7.50's until it expires (in 2 years or 3 years, I forget which). When it's time to renew, it will only be good to 8.50's due to recent NHRA rule changes.

Roger (Ol' Pinion Head) is in Oklahoma and has contacts, he can probably find someone to deliver it inexpensively. Or you can bring your own trailer to Norwalk and I'll deliver it there. Something can always be worked out.

I'm a big tall fat burly guy that never likes to shave, and loosely resemble the character "Mongo" from the Mel Brooks movie "Blazing Saddles". Someone here on the board hung that name on me at least 4 years ago and it has stuck ever since.

Jenifer this is my 2 cents.You have the Pontiac Southern nationals in a couple of weeks.There will be pontiac venders from all over the country plus many members of PY that will be there.There are Many Pontiac Guys in your area that would probaly help you and send you in the right direction.
#1 Do your research
#2 ask Qustions there are no Dumb Qustions
#3 A pontiac is not a big block all Pontiacs are the same external dimentions but different bore and stroke.
#4no problem to get 400 hp out of a 400 cu pontiac.
