Sorry for the confusion to those who opened this first.
The pits do not seem to be to deep but am wondering if the block is going to be scrap or not. Plan on haing it tested but not until Oct. Coated it all in axle grease to stop it until then. Any reply would be appreciated. Tom |

Its hard to say, if its a standard bore the better your chances. I have a 428 block with very bad pitting, If you take it to your machine shop have them bore the worst cylinder first, they shouldnt charge much. If its just one cylinder you could always have it sleeved.

So if the ultimate goal is 060 over take and have 050 over done and see what happens?

might as well have them go .060 to see if it will clean up unless you plan to have custom made pistons in .050

Wasn't planning to have custom pistons made. There is a school of thought around here in VA that you should not bore an engine out to 060 over. So I was planning to ship it out to get done. All in all it is just not in the plans to lay out that kind of money. Just dropped money on a rearend conversion and have to wait till next year for the motor. Will the way I have it stored keep it ok till then?

The block I'm using in my current engine started out worse than the pics you've got here. I bored my 428 block 0.065 over and it was fine.

My 455 looked worse than your pics. I had it punched .060 and it came out great. Unless I'm mistaken, the 428 is fairly rare. I even consider sleeving as the previous post recommended.
Good luck, let us know the status.

0.060 over is quite a bit. Depending whether your block is stock or not, the machine shop may even have to make two passes to take that much out of the cylinders. They did on mine, though it was 0.065 over.

Everbody thanks for the replies. It gives me piece of mind (hopefully the one I lost in the 70's). I knew some one here had this type of situation and would be able to tell if it was junk or not.
I will not have the work done until next year cause the 400 I have now is in the car running. Tom |

The goal for this engine is 060 over. So that was what I was going with. Seeing the pitts in the Cyl walls disturbed me. All the other ones are smooth as glass. Crank is in great shape without any ridges on the mains and rod journals.

They don't look that bad in the pics.If your not going to bore it for awhile give it a honing and a good coating of WD40 or the like to help stop it from getting any worse.
