Thought I would post some pictures on the end result of opening up a scoop. Overall, it wasn’t too difficult but you need to spend some time on it otherwise you can really mess up. The whole process takes about 3 hours. I posted pics of the tools you need.

I did the work from the back and first took a permanent marker and drew around the opening. I used a cutoff wheel to run along the top and bottom. For the ends, I used a step bit (not pictured) to drill out the correct circumference. I used a vice with a towel to hold the scoop.

Surprisingly, I though the die grinder would be “the” tool in the process but it wasn’t, as it turned out the pot metal just melted and made the tool worthless. After you get the rough areas cut out the files did the job. I used the circular file for the ends, the triangle file for removing larger pieces of metal and the flat file for finish work. You should only use the circular file at the ends as any of the others can ruin the turns.

It wasn’t too fun but it was fairly easy. Next I’ll get it dipped and use emery to smooth out any nicks…

I strongly recommend GOOD files. A good file will make the job go easy..I used snap on for the scoop and they worked very well.

Looks better that one that I have on my recently purchased GTO that I'm going to replace.

I however took a different approach on one that I did by only cutting the slits out between each fin. I'll post a picture if I can borrow a camera

I would like to know too....I was trying that but hit the fins with the cutoff wheel. I think it would look great but in my case I wasn't able to do it....

I used a dremil (sp)and a larger diameter cut off wheel (about 1-1/2" diameter) It took about 4 hours. I made the initial cut on the front of each fin in the middle until the blade went through, then finished the cut from the back while watching the front to make sure I stayed between the lines and diden't cut too far on both ends.

I'll take some pictures tonight and post them tomorrow.

catch, if your scoop loks good, i'm sure it does.. would you want to do this to mine and get paid for it?? my scoop has already been painted..

66 Tempest, I'd do for you for the shipping charges but you better wait until you see mine until you make a decision. I took a couple of pictures last light but forgot the camera at home. I'll go pick it up this morning and get them posted today.

after looking at the pics, I cant see anything wrong with yours, the fins look fine, acually really good, where do you see imperfections? are they visible in these pics?? I will remove my scoop today and post a pic of it, I could tape up all surroundings to protect paint..

66, the only real imperfections it has are that the casting on all the fins are not the same thickness so some of my cuts were a little off.

Look at your scoop and see it all the fins are the same thickness. If so, it will make the job easier.

Guys,
I love the open scoop and have contemplated adding the "Ram Air" set up to mine. I can't seem to make myself cut up my original hood. How are you dealing with that issue?
And if I did come to grips with it; Isn't cutting the hood a lot harder than opening the scoop? Especially if it is already painted, fit, etc.?

Andy.. I kept on looking at my scoop, and thinking can I do this, well I had the dremel, and cut off disc, I painted my car this summer and never painted the scoops because I was not sure what I was going to do, so I said if I can do one I can do them all, I took my dremel and cut from the back side, luckely i did't mess up, i think with some high build primer and some wet sanding the should come out extremely well, I was espeacially scaired to do this because this was already painted, didn't want to have to buy a another and repaint, I did one side and ran out of bits, I post pics when completed, thanks andy for your generous offer to do this for me, You got me anxiuos to do it myself.. Iprobaly would of blamed you if I messed up..... lol..just kidding

I ordered my VFN fiberglass hood with the scoops open. and had them install a wire mesh to keep the big stuff out. That way I didn't have to mess with any cutting at all
