Need to replace my 69 dash, and it appears no repros are being made (probably old news to the rest of you 69 guys). I'm looking at these repro dash caps that everyone sells (I assume they are all the same?), that you glue onto the top of your old dash.
Has anyone used them? Are they worth a dang? How is the install? Durability? I need one in black, A/C w/ side vents.... I know you can get a very nice dash from Just Dashes, but for a $500-600 difference in price I thought I might consider one of these caps first.  Building a nice driver, not a show resto. Chris

I have one on my 69 with a/c. They're good quality. Not only does Just Dashes charge you the $500-$600 BUT YOU PAY $35-$50 for shipping.

Excellent product! I put one on my '69 GTO dash w/ac and you cannot tell it is not the original dash unless you know that the dash was soft and not a hard plastic. If you are doing a consourse show car it will not do, but for a driver or resto they look great. Simple to install, durable and great fit.

Thanks a bunch for the replies guys. I'm going to try it.
Another question: my original dash is badly sunbaked and extremely brittle - moderate pressure from a single finger can easily crack right through it on top. Do you think I will have issues with stability/adhesion with the plastic cap, with it breaking pieces of the old dash away from the foam core along the top edge? Or should it stay together OK? Anyone glued on onto a snap-crackle-pop old dash like mine? Chris

Chris - My dash was very dried out and brittle. Since the cap is one piece, it has a lot of structural integrity to it. I sanded the dash and prepped it with paint prep to take all the old treatments off it. I made sure any high areas were sanded down and then glued it. It's been on a year and it still looks great. Just take your time, and make sure you heat up the silicone adhesive in the tube so it flows easily. Also, use clamps, bungee chords, towels, etc. all along the cap to make sure that all areas are firm against the dash so you get a good glue job. If you do it right, I promise you that you will be happy with the results.

...I disagree. For a "driver" the caps are fine. Maybe Mr. Bill will "do-it-right" and buy you a 700.00 (+shipping) dash from Just Dashes!!

Actually Im getting mine from from Just Dashes next week. $600---but I guess if you count the $100 I wasted on the cap--it was $700.

Just curious Bill, What kind of problem did you have with the cap?
The ones that I've seen looked good and I couldn't tell it from original until I looked closely at the edge and kind of tapped it with my finger to find that it was hard plastic instead of a pad. Later, I mistook and authentic pad in a '70 el Camino for a plastic cap until the owner pointed out that it was the original.

Im sticking to my guns on this one. PROPERLY installed, they DO look good. We even installed one on a MBZ 450SL, and it too looked good. Not "Factory fresh" mind you, but "good". If you are super-anal, Just Dashes as Mr.Bill is doing is great, but if you actually drive your car, and want to spend the extra 500-600.00 on something else. Go for da cap.

Maybe Im a perfectionist on this issue--but as complicated as a 69's dash is, it is very difficult to get these caps to fit correctly around all the dash openings, especially the center AC vent. I guess if you got a perfect glued seam around this opening and the speedo, etc, it might look OK. But without that--I could always see the lose seam. Maybe other people couldnt tell(or just didnt look), but I could. On mine, I didnt realy need a dash cover around the gauges and AC vents to start with, it was just bad on the top. Too bad they dont make one for 69 that would just cover the top and not extend around the multiple openings on the front of this dash. Anyway--I ripped it off---the new restored dash looks great sitting on my work bench right now.

They might look OK where you are only covering the top of the dash. They look like crap on a 69.
