I am Rick not Dave, I am impressed with the KRE's so far . I adjusted the jetting and dropped the timing and had a notable improvement ! In fact I fragged the trans on I-20 doing a test and tune. Understand that when I talked to Jeff Kauffman , my shift points were at 5000 rpm. My new shift points are now at 5700. This created a noticeable increase. The heads are breathing much better. We'll see how it all works out at Norwalk on thursday and friday for test and tune.

Rick.... Take that T-350 out and install a T-400. LOL. Dave said if ya start getting close, he's buying a Dude 511 cu.in. Street Crate Engine. Bwahahahahaha.

Well since it appears cutting my 6 x heads is nto that great an idea how much are these KRE heads and what type of compression will I wind up with using flat tops? Are they much cheaper than the good but very pricey e heads. Was thinking 9 to 9.5 to 1 would be all I want for compression.

I've been driving the car on the street since installing the heads. The engine makes more power at every rpm. It is not managable on street type radial tires. Prior to installing KRE's heads 1st gear was useless at any rpm or vehicle speed I could roast the tires. The tires wouldn't hold in second gear below about 45 mph. Currently, second gear is useless and I've even broke the tires loose a few times in high gear! The slight increase in static compression seems to have offset the slightly larger and better flowing runners as throttle feel off idle is just as smooth as the iron heads. For some reason that I don't understand, the engine idles a tad rougher with the aluminum heads and wants more fuel at part throttle? I made a few quick adjustments to the idle and part throttle mixtures and it responded perfectly.
The engine runs just as cool with these heads as the iron heads, but heats up to temps a bit quicker. With the iron heads it took at least 15 minutes to get the engine up to 180 degrees. The aluminum heads have the temps up to 180 degrees in about 5 minutes. No ideas about that one? The ET Streets are in place and we're headed for the track early next week. Provided I can hook this thing up it should make for some improved runs over the iron heads. I'll make sure to post the results......Cliff

The heating issue makes sense to me. Aluminum conducts heat much better than iron so they heat up faster and transfer the heat to the cooling system faster. You'll be thankful in the winter time ;o)

ran the 446CI motor on the dyno with 65CC KREs.They replaced 260ish 63 SD heads, same cam, same intake and same carbs but diff dyno. The only good thing about the replacement was the need for 4 degree less total lead.My KREs had a light street port and are in the 280 range. The iron heads made 478HP at 6100 and the KREs made 463HP at 5800.We added 1 point of CR to make up for the heat loss.I dont see the gains with the 65CCs that are being touted with the larger chambers.Maybe the 980 heads are much better than the later 6x type heads and the KREs dont show as much gain.FYI,Tom

Cliff,
Do you have the seperate cooling lines from the water cross over going to the back of the KRE's? Tom |

Tom S: that is very interesting. Do you have flow # for the 980s and runner cc to compare with the KREs. I have never seen a pair of 980s (not even a picture) but have heard a lot of people so that they are one of, if not the best head Pontiac made.

Also did you run the same intake on both heads. I thought that the 980 had a different intake style.

dont have the numbers, did them long time ago,the intake is the bathtub I converted to fit the KRE heads, cut the water off,put the water from one of the new 66 alu tripower intakes to it.The ports of the intake are actually a little taller than the KRE ports so there is a little missmatch.Tom

What about the torque numbers. I would be interested to see how much low end torque you gained for the trade off of less horesower. Either way i would probably be pretty angry if i paid all that money for ported aluminum heads that made less power than my iron heads unless you saw a big difference at the strip.

I launch the car at 6000 so low end TQ was NEVER a thought in my use. Also we start the pulls at 3500 so do not have the under numbers.Tom

Track testing is complete. we went to Norwalk on Monday and managed a best of 11.81 @ 114.20mph. Yesterday at the Tri Power Nat's I bested that in the last run of the day with an 11.79 @ 114.46mph. The engines runs flawlessly and makes more power everywhere as noted on the timeslips. It took some getting used to for launch technique, I was plagued with red lights most of the weekend. Yesterday the stage rpm was lowered and I started leaving later off the bulb. This proved to be a deadly combination. I managed to win the Stock Class and defeat the winner from Saturday's race in a run off afterward. We had a great time this weekend and got to meet a lot of nice folks....Cliff
