having some electrical issues,(all kinds of melted wires!! HAHA) and just want to switch over to a GM one wire alternator. who has done this in there early pontiac? mines a 60.

what did you use, and what happens to the voltage regulator?

I haven't used a 1 wire deal but, I switched over to the internal regulated alt (most common) that Pontiac started using in late '70 for my '61. 100,000 now with no problems. Steve www.pontiacheaven.org

If you are going to switch like Steve said go to the internal regulator. The external regulators arent lasting too long. Try to email George Kusanski he knows everything electrical

And stay away from the one wire types. You will get better performance from the voltage sensing function of the three wire.

do you have a part number for that internally regualated alternator? and any tips on installation? did you have to do some creative rewiring? how about the bracket and mounting situation?

any help is greatly appreciated. i'm going to try and tackle this tonight if i can find parts.

Just ask for a pontiac alt w built in regulator. 69 0r 70 up to 79. $39 at autozone
Installation Post question in the electrical section and George Kujanski will come to you. He is a great guy and super knowledgeable. You might have to make or adapt brackets to mount it on that engine though but I really dont know.

Its very simple the internal regulator alternator has the heavy #10 battery wire going to the starter (hooks up at the battery cable). Stop at your local Auto Zone they have the polerized plug for the regulator in the alternator. Plug it in the alternator there is a red and white wire the red goes to the ignition switch (on hot) wire the white goes to the idiot light.

well guys, after pulling my hair out speaking with the guys at schucks..."uh, that car comes with a generator, not an alternator, and i can't get you a generator"..."yes, i know, i want to do a conversion"...."uh, the computer says you need a generator"..."just sell me an alternator that fits a mid 70's pontiac"...."uh, i thought you said it was for a 60?".....

so, i called an automotive electrics shop. got a guy who had pontiacs and knew exactly what i needed. picked up a motorola adjustable alternator today. the thing is pretty trick. fully adjustable pully, and almost zero fabrication to install it. and i cost me the same as buying a buying a AC delco that was gonna be a headache to install.

gonna put it in tomorrow. should be slick, and its a 80 amp output.

well, it's gonna have to wait till the weekend. too much new years fun last night for me, and it's raining like crazy and too damn cold to work today.

hopefully i drop it in saturday, so i'll take pics then.
