I agree. I just posted what was supposed to have been written by an NHRA tech person. If it was written by an NHRA tech person he obviously made a mistake or maybe mis print.

I have a question for Tiki. Why is it that the guys in the top stock classes can wear a T-shirt when they run in the 9s and 10s and I have to were the ***ggot little fire jacket to run low 11s? I think I have even seen SS guys in Tees.

I think your talking about NHRA stock and superstock classes? Your right those stock classes got their own section in the rulebook. Shorts and or tank tops prohibited while driving vehicle. pg.64 sect. 10;driver...I remember a guy who drove barefoot. This is the way it has been done sincer Wally and Cal timing Ass. started it in the yr. 0. The cars are stock and except for engine are basically that showroom stock. In those days you could order a 265-455 Indian, 365-426 Hemi or 348-427 Big Block, 440 Wedge, 327 375hp Mouse, 421-428 SD etc. with all the trimmings. Gear choice to 4.88. Auto or stick in several choices ea. This would be a good question for Bob Frye or Graham Light. OR W.P. As they say "it's the way they do it". Why does the Earth go around the sun. Why does the Moon go around the Earth. Why does life begin at 40. As I have posted several times. A system of reporting incidents on tracks to NHRA is what makes rule changes. Not a mfg. lobby! They just don't have the incidents in the stock classes, as compared to ET bracket incidents, to warrant any rule changes. WHEW!

Tiki, I hear what you are saying. But there is another question I have regarding the clothing. Why do the stock and super stock guys have to wear fire jackets when they race in the sportsman classes? Is it because the cars are unsafe when racing against us peons or is the NHRA just gouging the Sportsman racers because we are more plentiful? Couldn't be revenue driven--not the NHRA. The same thing goes for lap belts vs 5 point hanesses. A stocker can have a 40 year old lap belt but my 5 point has to be changed every 2 years. HMMMM as the Dude would say.

1st lets get the classes right NHRA classifies everything that is not a, top fueler, fuel funny, pro strock, or pro stock bike as sportsman classes include, alky dragster and funnys, Comp. eliminator, stock, superstock, and super classes S/C S/G and S/ST. ET classes are Advanced ET, superpro, pro, and sportsman(formerly street),snowmobile, atv, electric cars and bikes. and new Top Sportsman. Exhibition vehicles, jets, pro mod and wheel standers. Nostalga classes too. Jr. dragsters, well no comment here. NHRA says that when a car is at a bracket event they follow bracket rules. This is why you see the jackets and pants there. Believe it or not NHRA is classified as a non profit organization. Thay recieve advertising money, but no kickbacks that I am aware of from mfgs. Remember a kickback is only illegal if you put it in your pocket, not illegal if you put it into the company.

So what your saying is.............. I can run a T-Top car to 10 flat as long as the firewall and floors aren't modified and a 6 point roll bar is installed?

Is that with and without the T-tops installed?

Yes and you only need a 5 pt. cage. Pass. door bar not mandatory.Rollbar 1 3/4" .118 wall mild steel or .083 molly to 10 flat or 135mph whichever comes first. With t-tops out you need it at 13.99. Don't buy a full cage and only put in the rollbar part it's only 1 5/8"

Just got my car certified today. Good to 8.50 no faster. These new rules are already in effect. NHRA tech man gave me a copy of what would have to be done my car to get it to 8.49 down. Not only a funny car cage but braces to be installed under the body also. I will see if i can scan it and post it.

Inspector told me they are trying to give the heavy street cars the heave ho, or keep them from going faster than 8.50.

on a diet to go faster........

Tiki, maybe I should have said ET bracket racers. These racers provide the tracks with 90% of their revenue. Alcohol cars are on the bubble with NHRA because the tracks would rather run super street. Why, more money. Niether the NHRA or the various tracks give a darn about ET racers or entertainment value. More whining---whats with the LED timing lights? Compulink comes up with this new and wonderful idea and NHRA goes with it. No input from the racers. Small track racers go to the ET finals at the big tracks and they have to "learn the leave" all over again. But think how many LED equiped practice trees will be sold--sorry Wally but it just doesn't make sense.

It's Always about money and Big Business.

Sorta like the rained out pit area at Gainsville and the bracket/super classes having to go allllllllllllllllllllll the way to Orando to race and then return for finals at Gainsville????????? Try that dial in stuff. Plus the motel senerio.

I thought the the new rules wouldn't be in effect till January.

I guess I got lucky?
Also told Herdswoman too and she had her's done.

Do you have any info on the roll bar thickness requirments and heavier Non tubed cars? Was told there would be a change there too.

NHRA officials are present at only a few of the races ie. National meets, Div. points meets, National opens. Jegs super quicks, and ET finals. All the other thousands of races held at local tracks every weekend through the year, are done by the tracks themselves. Your tech official at the local level carries an NHRA bronze tech card, requirements for this card is, 6 hr. seminar once a year and an open book test every two yrs. Next level is silver card div. pts. meets, nat. opens. jegs series and ET finals, same seminar and testing procedure. Then there is the gold card. Test evey yr., and responsible for national events. The LED thingy is mandatory only at Nats, Div., Opens, and Jegs meets. If your track has one of these, then your track owner is taking them out afterwards. SOBs arn't they. In Ohio you hardly see a LED stop light, on a recent trip to Connecticut I noticed all lights were LED. There is only one way to change thing and that is to band together and bring your point home to the track owner. I've suggested that we post the problems at your track on PY Forums, with the E-mail address of the track and lets see what 8,000 E-mails saying "I won't race your track until you change _______ ( FILL IN THE BLANK). Did you ever try to read 20 E-mails its tough not to get the point. As for you Pdude even rules are different in different Divs. are not the same. Those tubing thickness are for all cars. Full cage thickness are 1 5/8" dia .118 mild and .083 molly. The cross bars in both rollbar and cage is only 1 1/4" dia. same thickness tubing.

Tiki.

What I was getting at was........... that I was told that NHRA will require (sometime in the future) all cars weighing over 3000 or 3500 lbs or some arbitrary weight, that the tubing size will increase from .118 to a thicker bar.

Is this true and at what weight? And/or ET?

Won't find out till seminar this January at the div. 3 banquet in Indy. Can't get any answers from my Div. at this time, everything will remain the same till next yr. I know you hoped for more, but it will come before your next chassis cert.

Officially NHRA says as of now the rules are the same. Unofficialy it looks like the new chassis tags will have punch outs as to how fast your vehicle will be permitted to run. It looks like the 8.50 tag will be for door cars, street roadsters, and some altered cars, hints are that you won 't need any modification to cage until 8.50 sec. This could be limited to Comp. Elim., but don't hold your breath. There have been some pretty bad incidents this year with these cars and the reports are mounting to a point where they are going to have to make changes. They are mainly interested in the floor area. No hints from deep throat that it will affect ET brackets. BUT????
