Hello all. Im about to start upgrading the engine and need some help. I want to up the "umff" out of my 2bbl 350 but dont know what would work well together.I want to keep the original 350. Every thing is stock except for dual exhaust and flowmasters 40's. What kind of carb, headers, intake, and cam should I look for? Keep in mind this is a daily driver, that MIGHT see some runs at the strip. The guy i bought the car off of ( 2 months ago acually) said he changed the heads to run pump gas (87 i think not quite sure) Is there a way to check which heads it has? He also said he made the engine into a 396 when he had it overhauled so i dont know if this is true, and can't get ahold of him to ask him question about the rebuild. Any help?

I doubt it's a 396 first off. You could go with a 600 CFM Electric choke carb, or a Q-jet. Performer manifold, or a stock manifold would be fine. The cam in mine is a Crane 216/228 .454 lift. Any four tube headers would be fine. Head ID is as simple as looking at the numbers on the center Ex. port. (Try this http://www.pontiacstreetperformance.com/psp/headID.html)

What is your rear gear?

Good luck with it!

BTW, many will say that you should save your $ and build a 400 or 455 instead of dumping it into the 350. Really depends what your gaols are, but it may be something to consider.

Only if it got a 4.25 stroker crank put in it. But I think it would still be off on size. A .060" over bore with the 4.25" crank is 410.5 c.i.d. So maybe a std. bore block?

My daily driver '69 LeMans has the original 350 in it. It runs 14.60's at the strip. Not a screamer by any stretch of the imagination, but it holds it's own.

The combo:
Stock bore and pistons
The stock heads got a port match and a little bowl work.
4 tube POS headers
Performer aluminum manifold I got for $20
600cfm Holley vac secondary carb. I'm going to find a Q-Jet for it though.
H-O Racing's HCO-2a cam
TH350 trans and a stock convertor
2.78:1 rear gears.
Rebuilt HEI w/AC Delco stock-style internals.

Eventually I'll take the 3.23:1 rear that used to be in my '71 and possibly a convertor with a little more stall. That will wake this car up quite a bit.
For now, it has A/C, a heater, a stereo, and gets me back and forth to work.

Whoops... Edited wrong post!

I also think it's not a 396, but just to make sure im going to check hopefully this week end, or next. I'll look at the heads tomorrow and tell you guys to see if they're worth it. As for the rear gear...I don't know, its all stock so i think that's stock also. If you guys have any clue as to the ratio let me know. Many told me to save for a 400, but im low on funds and want to keep the original engine. My goals are to have a daily driver that can hold it's own against some modern domestics. Im not looking for a 500 hp monster. Maybe along the lines of 320-350 rwhp if possible. Kind of like PMDRACER's LeMans would be good in my book. My friend's stock 2bbl 350 77 Camaro ran 17.9 and 18.2 on a 1/4 so PMD's is monster compared to my friends. I was REALLY amazed he ran so...slow. LOL..I felt kind of bad . I'll try and get a similar setup like PMD's. Are the remanufactured Q-Jets from Summit any good? I've been giving them some thought. How about the 2802 cam from summit compared to HO racing's cam?

My 73 ventura ran mid 15s with only a performer,3310 holley(detune slightly),and dual exhaust w/flowmasters stock th350 w/hd b&m shift kit and 3.42s and NEVER leaked anything, always started(elec.choke)and was fun to drive. With a cam the right heads a little work, maybe headers,a little stall conv., I know it would have lopped at least a full second probably more, without losing much driveability, and I drove it ALL the time(daily driver)

15's is not bad at all. I drive this car EVERY day and this is my first muscle car so im kinda anxious to get her up to par with the other muscle cars in the car club. Im guessing im would probably run 17's also with my current setup. After seeing the numbers for my friends car, i dont even wanna go to the strip yet. I still got reseal the tranny. Some bumb nut "fixed" the leak it had, but found out he did a horrible job when it was time for an oil change. He used orange silicon to stop the leak...and what a MESSY and HORRIBLE job he did! Hopefully i can drop into the mid 14's when im done with the engine. That's all im hoping for *crosses fingers*

EDIT: Thanks for the pic greg!

Do you know which cylinder heads you have? All of the 1970 350 engine had a #11 head casting number. These can be made to work well on a 350. They were rated 8.8 to 1 compression. Your block code shouyld be a YU or WU. That is found under the passenger side head on the front of the block. It is stamped in. There will be some other numbers above it. A combo that works good with these engines is the 4 tube style headers, (flowtechs i think have the cheapest that will work) avoid the three tube headers!!! You might as well stay with the manifolds before the 3 tubes! PY offers a nice exhuast system I would go with 2 1/2" dia back to a good muffler like the dynomax or Magnaflow (my favorite after testing) and then your choice of 2 1/4" tailpipes or 2 1/2". You won't notice a difference between the two sizes on the tailpipes. Intake wise go with a Edelbrock performer or if you want to look stock, any of the 67-72 factory 4 bbl. intakes (just make sure it is pre e.g.r.). If you don't want to change valve springs, the Melling 068 replacement cam (melling SPC-7) works great.(appox. $100) Avoid the crane "blueprint" junk. Not the same cam profile at all. Advance the cam 2 degrees. Set your ignition timing around 12-14 initail. Your total timing needs to come in alot earlier than stock. If you don't have Jim Hands book, you need it. He shows the right things to do. This should help liven that thing up.

Forgot; A 600 holley carb on a budget works well, their cheap 1850 series. Their cheap 3310 series 750 will work too. Alittle more money, the 670 Street Advenger is an awesome improvement. But no matter what carb you get, if it is brand new, it needs to be taken apart and the shavings cleaned out. Thats with Holley, Edelbrock and Bg's Demons.

My 350 went 13.80's, so it can be done. I used a Holley 600 on mine also.....in fact I'm getting rid of it if you are interested.

My car has a .030 over 350, 47 heads(no porting, just PC seals), Performer intake, 3.55 rear, 2400 stall. You can wake that little mill up easily.

Jagtec1-
I am looking to replace the Rochester 2bbl on my '71 Pontiac 350 and am interested in your Holley 600. Will it fit on the stock intake?

Please email me details and pics.
Thanks,
JB

The engine is a YU Code 350 with #11 head casting. My local checkers has some flowtech headers for $212 and hooker headers for $198. Would I need to get a new complete exhaust system or stick with the current duals flowmasters I have in car? If I decide to go ahead and change valve springs which cam should I get? I keep getting "Get the summit 2802 cam" advice. Is it good cam for my needs? What about the crane powermax, 216/216 .454? Whats the combo on your 350 Jagtec1? How much money did you have to spend? One quick question, what is the octane I will have to be using when done? I run 88 right now.

On the hooker headers, is that their overpriced 3 tubes? I haven't seen hookers that cheap new that were 4 tube style in a long time. The summit 2802 cam could work if you go to a 3.42 type rear gear. But the Wolverine cam with same duration @ .050" lift only on a 112 lobe seperation angle will out perform it. However, if you have power brakes, then go with the summit one.

No, it's the 4 tube headers. I don't have power brakes . So is summit out of the question? Im having a very difficult time deciding what cam to get. I want the most out of the engine (low 14's) without losing drivability. I'll do some research on the wolverine cam.

I have a 1970 350 with #11 heads and I got the whole Edelbrock performer package. The manifold, performer plus camshaft with lifters, and valve springs. Goina use a Q-Jet on mine should be fun for awhile until i get the 413 stroker kit I have 455's and everything that i could put the 350 is numbers matching and should be fun enough for now. Good luck!

Guys I think you are sending him way in the wrong direction with the Wolverine cam and or the 2802 in a 350. With that much duration (224/234, .465/.488 lift) that motor would be an absolute dog. Stay small with the cam and save the money on springs, screw in studs and adjustable valvetrain for your next motor or stroker. If you like the Summit cams get the 2800 (204/214 .420/.442 lift), which is the same as the performer cam. That with the 600 holley, or look at the spreadbore 650 vacuum secondary holley with stock intake, a good set of headers and exhaust system will give you a great tire-smoking combo. It won't break the bank either. LOL Bill

i have a 350 too, and i have question about carb. I think of modifying my engine a little and i would prefer a spread bore (for smooth driving and gas mileage) but i don't known what can be the best manufacturer. Holley?
I think of choosing edelbrock performer, a 204-214° cam (edelbrock or summit, i don't know), new lifter.
I will like to make has little close the same thing as 70leMans.
