I'm in the process of switching out the manifold and 2bbl Rochester on my 66 YD 389.
I'm going with a manifold and 4bbl Carter from a 65 YF 389. Is there any info or advice I need to know by doing this switch? Looks to me that it will be a direct replacement with no hassles. It's in a 66 Cat with turbo hydramatic and a/c. Should everything connect right up? Accelerator linkage, vacuum line for the tranny etc? I'm pretty sure the camshaft for my YD is different than the YF. Any issues there?? Thanks... |

I have done the same switch, and other than the carb I bought was bad, I had to get a new one, everything went well. You may have to get new hoses if the old ones crack when being removed, but you can buy that pretty cheap from almost any part store.

What carb did you have and what was wrong with it?
What kind of carb did you replace it with? I've rebuilt my Carter, everything went pretty smooth. Looking forward to getting it going. Did you have any problems with the accelerator linkage or was it just a simple adjustment? What about the vacuum line for the tranny?? Thanks!! |

The vacuum lines for your tranny and distributor advance will hook up in different places. I think they both use the 066 cam. Only difference is the carb itself. As far as the manifolds swapping, they are exactly the same. As Seth said, go ahead and do yourself a favor and hit the parts store and buy new fuel and vacuum lines. They will almost always crack and its not a bad idea to change them out anyways while you are in there. Be extremely careful when removing the lines from the plastic 3-way vacuum connection in front of the carb. They crack easily also and you won't find another one if you need it. When I'm doing stuff where I have to remove the lines off that connector, I usually cut the line away with a razor and just replace the line instead if ruining the connector.

I had a carter 625, and despite my best efforts the idle mixture screws would not respond I posted asking what the problem was and was told it needed a rebuild so I took it apart and other than a jet being installed improperly, which didn't fix it , there was nothing visibly wrong even rebuilt it wouldn't respond so, I decided enough is enough an d put an edelbrock on it and it runs like a top.
All I can figure is that the idle mixture circuit was damaged, or one of the other circuits. Which to my knowledge makes the carter an expensive paper weight. |

Hey Mr. Cat,
Thanks for the info. Which Carb did you end up going with? Did you just bolt it up and go? I'm looking at a #1406. What about your throttle linkage and vacuum lines for the tranny? Any problems there? Hows it running now? Any pics? Thanks everyone for your input. |

Thanks Joe, thats what I'll do...
Just puzzled about the throttle linkage thing. I've rebuilt my carter and hoping it will run fine but getting my ducks in a row incase I need to replace. I may end up just switching it anyway. Know more this weekend. |

I used an Edelbrock 600cfm performer. It worked fine I had to get a coupling for the vacuum line but You may not need it, if you do their at hardware stores.
