I just bought a new repro shroud and a 19" flex fan to hell cool her down. I am not sure where the two little clips that came with it go. i know they hold the bottom of the shroud but to what. I bought a new 4 core rad for a 69 bird from ames. I have a 1 3/4 spacer making the fan just inside the shroud. But when i bolted the top of the shroud and then slid each side of the shroud into the big clips that are welded on the rad, the fan hits the shroud. just not enough room. driving me mad !!! anyone else have any problems.

Sounds like you have the same set up that I have. Where exactly is the fan hitting the shroud?

Also, there was a person with a similar problem that was posted in the body tech area and the topic was ": HELP! Core support/rad shroud alignment (fan hitting)"
You might get some good ideas from there. |

well the fan seems to hit the sides of the shroud.... , it has like 1/2 inch one side nad like 1/8 the other. so i think i am going to drill a small hole in teh shroud on the bad side and use a piece of wire to pull it out away from the fan, and tie off that wire to something. If it was hitting the bottom or top i would say the engine or rad support might be high or low, but the sides? maybe motor is off a little or whole front end. i have no soultions, smaller fan i guess...

Does your fan go all the way in? My 5 blade clutch fan goes about 1/3 to maybe 1/2 inside the shroud. Something to look into.

Tom, where abouts in MA are you? E-mail me as I am in MA as well, and maybe I can help you. I have a 69 as well with 400 and a clutch flex fan.

I guess my advise would be to start at the obvious things and work your way down.
1) Are the motor mounts in good shape? If not the engine can be sitting crooked thus causing your interferance 2) Is the transmission mount in good shape? 3) Are the body and radiator support mounts in good shape? Take some diagonal measurements in the engine compartment to insure that the sub frame is on square and that the sheet metal is on square. Sometimes the mounts rot out and the subframe will shift causing the sheet metal to be right but the engine would be slightly cocked. 4) Is the radiator built correctly? Compare the tank and bolt hole locations from your original radiator to the new one. It might be that the new radiator mounting brackets are shifted which will screw up the shroud location. My desert cooler radiator had this problem and I have to grind and shim it to get it to fit right. Just my $.02

Try loosening the trans mount bolts and push the tail of the trans to the passenger side of the tunnel while tightening the monut bolts. This may give you about 1/2 inch clearance.

thanks for all the info, i never thought to measure diagonal and stuff. ya almost seems engine is off a touch, but another problem is that the fan blades with a 1 3/4" spacer is still about 7" away from the rad. i know it's supposed to be very close right? can I put 2 2" spcers together to get a 4" spacer or not safe.. I think that will also help get the fan in the shroud a little more giving me some more clearance. i went to a show this weekend, saw many shrouds slotted and actually cut the bottom of the shroud right in half and opened it a little, sounds like a good idea no? i have slotted the top and done all, will remove and check again....

If you have the right shroud and the correct diameter fan, I'll bet your problem is motor or trans mounts. Fan should be 1/3 to 1/2 in the shroud, no matter how far that leaves it from the radiator. Properly positioned, the fan sucks air thru the radiator. To far in or out of the opening affects it ability to do that.

ok, i will belive ya, it's a 19" fan and a repro shroud from ames. Enigne is actually a 1970 pontiac, but i assume it is the same block dimensions as a 1969 block 350. The car is a 69 bird. but i am really not sure i want to lift the motor to put in new mounts. Tranny mount seems good though, had that off the crossmemeber before..

I measuered mine over the weekend. My flex is 19" diameter and the shroud opening is 21", so it seems I have more clearance than you do. The fan is about 3/4 away on one side and about 1 1/4 on the other. |

I had that problem reoccur this weekend on my NOS shroud. I got beneath the car and pulled down on the shroud on the pass side corner and put a 3/4 inch rubber spacer in there. I will see how that hold it. If It does well, I may just tap a screw there to hold the spacer in place or glue it there. It is not noticeable if I paint the head of the screw black.

Ya i did the same thing with my shroud, i drilled a hole at the bottom and put a long flat head srew down through the inside of the shroud and down into the frame rail. but it took the roundness out of the shroud and made it closer on one side, so i was done with that.. i took it out all togther and am just running a flex fan. i have a 3 " spacer to get it as close to the rad.
it alwyas runs 185 while moving creeps to 215 ish in stop and go, not too bad.... maybe a 18" fan would help too, but for now i need a break from that shroud.... |

Tomas,
I just installed a fan shroud into my 69 Firebird. I watched my temp go to 250 degrees in traffic the other day..freaked me out so I installed the fan shroud. I don't have a stock rad either. I got hosed for those expensive bottom clips ($33.00 for the funny looking bent one). Needless to say, the clips didn't fit anywhere nor did the shroud fit around the flex fan when the shroud sat where it was supposed to go. The bolts that the car shop dolt sold me didn't fit either. I went to Home Depot and got a couple of my own. I had to MacGiver the fan shroud in there, drill holes in it and pin it to the bottom with small gage wire but I got it to sit perfectly. I had to shift the shroud over to the passenger side a bit as well but it works like a charm now. I also took back those rediculously expensive clips too. |
