I've begun the task of reworking and polishing my RPM intake, and thought about applying a clear coat once it's done. Would this have a detrimental effect on the thermal properties of the aluminum? Can anyone recommend a spray-bomb clear coat that holds up well?

Trigger,
I polished my RPM intake as well and the clear will peel from the heat of the exhaust crossover.

Just keep it polished and it will be fine, otherwise send it to me and I'll remove the exhaust crossover like I did on mine so there's no worry's about heat!

Would I still encounter the peeling problem if the crossover on the heads was filled w/ aluminum? I'm leaning that direction anyway.

I polished an RPM recently and sprayed it with Eastwood's Diamond clear made for sealing aluminum. It looked awful so I wound up stripping it. The clear dulled it slightly and gave it a very slight yellow tint.

Zoops makes a product that looks great on aluminum but it costs $99 for a starter package. I've hear many good things about it and have seen some actual parts, but I'm too cheap to try it yet.

If you've filled the crossover, or even blocked it, you will not experience the heat-bubbling effect there.
We use a clear flat paint from a hobby store, made for flying model airplanes. It's "fuel proof" and holds up quite well. After glas-beading, intakes look REAL nice with the flat clear on them.

Darby,
That looks COOL!...nice job..who did it? did you have to spend alot?

I know your crossovers are fill in the heads and I see when they machined the passage out they did not cap or plug the hole in the intake.

Just so you'll know...I don't know what they filled it with but eventually over time it's possible the passage will leak a little so you might want to consider doing what I did to mine and install a step plug from the gasket side to prevent any leaks in the future.

Also I see you have that glass filter....there bad my friend as glass radiates heat and those filters let dirt go by into your carb...I'd suggest a neopreme bulb style with the paper filter in the center.

I think your car and set up is great ..espically your times...I just do want to make the same mistake I did in the past.
Jeff

Hey Jeff thanks Actually i did it myself! And the crossovers arent filled I made a aluminum block off plate to cover the hole just like the original plates that come with the 1233 only out of metal...and believe it or not the pad isnt machined was cut with a sawsall...looks good huh ...I usually run a plumbers pipe insulation around my lines this filter works incredibly well i have never had any starvation with it afraid to go to something else, but may in the spring...

Hey Darby,
YES it does looks GREAT... excelent job my friend and you didn't have to dish big cash to do it!

Mine's now on my car too...big differance from the stock HO alum intake, and I cut my divider down in the secondarys and I made a neat filler piece that snaps in to rebuild the divider...looks like a T-bone with the same radious in the back as stock.

I had a bad experance with those filters so it will not hurt my feelings to see you take it off..you can tell a good paper filter by seeing how much resistance there is by blowing through it..sounds silly but true..I have an old style Holley with removalbe element.
