Here is my 68 GTO corner patch that took a while for me to do, but I'm happy with it. Butt welded in. First pic is of the rust.

Looks really good. Did you form the patch or did you cut it from a donor?
My '68 has a rust problem in the same area. Several areas in fact but I dread trying to start cutting on my car for fear I'll make things worse.

Did you weld that from the back side?
How did you get it to look so nice?

Thanks for the replies.

Greg,
It was cut from a donor car. Then I cut and trimmed it to fit. Took a long time.

Troy,
This was welded from the outside. Like I said, it took a long time to cut out and fit. Then I just kept tack welding and grinding until the seam was welded shut. I've been using a thin cut off wheel to grind my welds down. The same one I used to cut out the rust. I don't know if anyone else does this or not, but its the only thing I had to grind with.

Thanks.

I have the same problem on my 68 convertible. I'm looking for that corner piece from a donor car. I need both sides. Does anyone out there have this to spare, or know where I could get it?. Thanks

Nice work! ..

I have the same patch to do on my 68 convert. Judas sent me a nice pre-formed patch that will address most of the problem.

Its on tap for as soon as I put the car down for the winter.

Very nice work. I like to see others take on the challenge of these repairs. Keep it up.

Visit your local automotive paint and body supply store, pick up the 3M Roloc discs for grinding. Although the cut-off wheel on a die-grinder comes in handly for tight spots I would really recommend the Rolocs for areas like you have done on the corner. With the various grtis available you'll spend less time grinding or worrying about the cut-off wheel gouging your nice work.

Visit the 3M web site or look here for a nice sample of the Roloc line.

Keep in mind there is a special madral required to use the Roloc discs. Chuck that into your die-grinder and you will never go back to a cut-off wheel for grining.

Darryl

GDK_AL,

I have a 3M roloc, but I havn't used it to grind with. I'll have to get some grinding disks and try it. Thanks for the tip.
Great web site. I use it often to look at what you did to the 1/4 panels.

Thanks.

The only reason I asked if you did it from the back is beacuse it did not look like you had a wide enough gap between the 2 pieces to butt weld them.

Thanks

A tight fit can work for MIG, howevber, I like about 1/16". It is all about penetration of the weld. If your heat is set right, you will get the penetration needed even if the fit is real close.
