Hi guys,
My 66 GTO power steering pump has a slow leak and does not operate at low RPM's. Question is: do I need a new pump, or is there a rebuild kit, or do I just need a new seal somewhere?
I want the quickest, easiest and best fix. I'd rather not commit myself to a long project...
Thanks, Fred

I rebuilt mine a number of years back. Since I dont remember the details, it couldnt have been very hard.. I'm not an expert mechanic..

I do recall something about the nut on the front being a strange shape and being a little hard to deal with...But once I had it open I think it was pretty simple. I think I bought the rebuild kit at napa, wasn't costly at all. And it solved my leaks..Hoses cost way more then that.. MIght check those first.. to be sure.

This is a true "quick fix". Most purest will not agree with me but I am not one, just a person that drives MY 67 GTO around 10,000 a year and loves it. I just went to Pep-Boys and bought a rebuilt. It is the EXACT same one that was on my car and it has worked fine for years. Comes with a guarentee but has a core charge. Just hang on to yours and rebuild it at leasure. Put yours back in an resll the other. Very quick fix and I believe they are around $35. I find it a lot easier to rebuild something when I want to and not when I have to. Get out and enjoy the weather!

Oh, as I recall, there was nothing unsual about the nut but there is a locking type peice directly behind the nut, as part of the pulley, that you will have to hold to loosen the outer nut. I think it is real tight behind the nut and it may be hard to get a standard thick wrench in there. I think I had to grind some of the meat off mine to fit in there[?]. The very first thing I did was loosen the nut, then removed the pump. It may help a little if you leave the belts on until you loosen the nut to give a little more tention.

Black Diamond,
Did you buy a rebuilt pump AND a rebuild kit then? Interesting...
