Is it worth the money . I just don't get much stopping power noe. 74 t/a. can you buy a kit to change them out or will a newer model from a junkyard work?

Hey PMDR, I note that you mounted the passenger caliper on the rear (as per original). I recently obtained a 12 bolt rear (70 GTO) that had this setup on it, but the shock absorber interfered with the emergency brake lever so they left it off (Yikes!)
I am not 100% sure this is a seville caliper set up but it looks like it to me. Wondering if this was an issue on your PMD (it appears not)?
Thanx.

No problems with the parking brake arms. The one shock takes a tiny bit of screwdriver help for removal. I also used the '79 Seville parts, which is a bigger caliper.
If my memory serves me right, I kept the orientation of the calipers because of something to do with the parking brake cables and how they would pass through the stock frame mounts and attach to the calipers.
Recently I grabbed the entire parking brake setup from a '79 Seville with the exception of the pedal. I'm going to try to adapt the dual cable pull design on the '71. I think this will end up working better.

Just got my first ten laser cut disc backing plates for Pontiac axles. These are going to the machinist Monday to be milled in the center to 0.039" to match the factory backing plates. These plates will use the very plentiful 80-85 Cadillac Eldo calipers. If you are interested in a set, give me a yell.

I plan to market these plates to PY and other Pontiac vendors eventually.

What would need to still be acquired to attach rear disc brakes in my 69 bird.
It actually has the 8.5 10 bolt in it now.

Marty -
Just use the stock parts from the Seville (or rear-disc 'Bird) as described on my website. Sice you have the "C-word" rear, it will bolt right up. Just buy the rotors new or used from a Firebird. The Seville uses a different bolt pattern.

I have set of the factory calipers/mounting brackets/master cylinder off a 78 Seville - looking for $100. Rotors were to thin to be turned. I used the P.Valve. Let me know.

Couple of questions for you PMDRACER:

I've been told I will need to have my axles machined, but I don't see where you say that is required on your website.

Does the wheel end up in the same position as with drums (or move outboard some)?

When using the pre-'91 Caprice aluminum master cylinder can you use the stock vacuum booster or does it have to be replaced.

My guy at the parts store is showing a part number on the Cadillac rear calipers being the same for 79-85. That sound right to the rest of you folks?

I see it this way, you need:

Rear brackets for mounting the calipers
Rear calipers
Pads
Lines to feed the calipers
E brake cables
New proportioning valve for four wheel disk
Residual valve (optional)
Rotors for a 79-81 TA (rear)

Am I missing anything?

JPJ -

You woke me up with that one. I was positive it was there, but had to check anyway. In the disc section, the third paragraph from the end says:
"As for the rotors, the T/A uses the same rotor as the Seville, but the Seville bolt pattern won't match, so you'll have to get a set of rear rotors for a T/A. You will need to have the axle flanges machined to fit inside the rotors."

The rear axles will end up moving outward the extra 3/32" on each side, plus or minus the thickness difference between the drum and the rotor at the wheel studs. (I say plus or minus, because I have seen rear rotors that were actually thinner than the drums in this area. Give you two guesses as to which overseas country made them.)

Yes, you can use the stock vacuum booster with the Caprice master cylinder.

Critter -

You will also need a disc/disc master cylinder. The stock GTO master will not work. You can use the disc/disc T/A, or the Caprice.

'77-mid '78 Seville used one style of caliper, caliper brackets, levers & guides. Calipers & caliper mtg brackets on these are longer from mtg pin to mtg pin.

late '78 production- '79 Seville used another style rear caliper brackets, levers, & guides. These calipers, one can lightly grind the tops of with an angle grinder & will fit under factory 14x7 rally II wheels or '70 1/2-72 T/A wheels with the small 14" centers.

'80-85 Seville used yet another style rear calipers, caliper brackets, levers, & guides.'79 Eldorado was also front wheel drive, thus Critter your partsman's application.

PMDR - Thanks for your reply. Wishful thinking that I wouldn't have to machine the axles. Where the car is stored there is a wall too close on one side to pull the axle, so may have to wait for Spring!

Got a notice today that my calipers & brackets ('78 Seville), and rotors (F-car) are at the Post Office. Now just need to look for e-brake cables, master cyl., brake lines, and prop. valve.

I see In-line Tube has the valve for about $100. Is there any way to get a new one for less? Haven't looked for a used one yet, but have a feeling it wouldn't be real easy to find.

FYI, I'm working on this for a TA, not a GTO. Thanks for all the good information from all you fellows who have been there before.

So, a disk/drum MC from a TA won't work? I suppose that's due to the smaller reservoir for the drums? Sorry to be so needy but I want to understand all this.

OPH, thanks for clearing that up for me. My parts man is cool. He's ordering in a set for me to look at and measure. If they won't do the trick, he's cool with sending them back. From your desicription, I'm not sure if these are the ones I'm looking for.

I also read something about the Ford Explorer style of rear calipers. Anyone know anything about these?

Let me pose this about M-cyls and 4 wheel disk t/a's.
Over the years i have owned a few 4 wheel disk 'birds. Every one had the single bail, large/small reservoir configuration just like a disc/drum application.
Now unless the disc/drum M-cyls. are different internally(valving?), I can't see the difference in obtaining a M-cyl. with equal capacity reservoirs.
From what I can recall, the 4 wheel discs applications of the vettes and JL8 z-28 camaros had the double bail, equal size reservoir M-cyls.

oPH...any replies?

Larry,
Am not the GM brake engineer, so cannot answer you on the why GM went to larger front capacity 4 wheel disc master cylinder vs using an earlier Vette piece. Would like to know this as well.

Hopefully Dave, aka PontiacT-37, the GM brake engineer will post, & share with us some of his input.
