I have a 1975 Pontiac Grand Lemans with a 400 V-8 4bbl in it. I have replaced the coil, cap, and now the dist. in it. It would run approx 200 miles after I replaced each of the coil and the cap. Then it died. The last time it died it backfired and died also. I had my friend replace the dist, which he thought was the problem, no help. The wires and plugs are good, the fusable link is good. It'll crank but not fire. Any idea's?

Still HEI?
Check for voltage going to the distributor. Have you replaced the rotor? Used the correct coil? This also assuming the distributor is timed right, wiring is good.Wire not loose inside the distributor.

Older HEI's have a known failure mode. The pickup coil wires fracture and go intermittent, then break totally.
Check if you get spark at all. If not, unplug the pickup coil and check if it is open (high resistance). George
