OK here is the question? I have a 64 GTO it was running hot at Idle, but would run fine while I was driving. well today I started it up(after three months of sitting in the cold Chicago weather) and the water pump was spitting all over the place. So what water pump do I go with, the cast or the stamped. and where do I get it?
Thanks Joe |

Joe,
Try our host PY, who stocks both types with the cast impeller favored by most Forum members. Les 66 GTO Sport Coupe,455/trips,700r/2500stall,12bolt/3.08,1.79/13.01/104.5 68 GP daily driver and 2004 Route 66 Tour participant under restoration -------------------------- Better lucky than good

It's a lot more expensive than the standard pump but you could also consider going with a Flow Kooler water pump. I bought one for my '68 and I'm pretty happy with it. I've never seen my temp gauge above 180 since I installed it. I have a '69-up timing cover so I got the aluminum pump. The '63-'68 pump is cast iron.

Sorry Joe,
Forgot that there are only rebuilt or nos waterpumps (not sure if they are cast or stamped impellers) available for the early 8 bolt pumps like yours (64-68). On my sig GTO below, I fitted a 69 timing cover to allow using the 11 bolt pump. The comment re Forum preference for the cast impeller applies to the later 11 bolt pump. Try Autozone and inspect the available cores or have yours rebuilt, as an alternative. The correct cast impeller for 64-5 is much smaller then the picture above. I used one similiar to the picture on my 65 post and could never get it to run cool. Changed to the smaller impeller pump, never had a problem since. The larger impeller moves the water too fast through the cooling system and does not allow it to cool correctly.

Thanks guys for all the replys, so now I am really confused, so what one did you go with Bob? and what do you think of that flow kooler? and does it matter what one I put on so I keep my car original?
Thanks Joe |

Hey Les -
So you say the PY water pump for the 11 bolt has the cast impeller. Did you notice a difference after putting it on? I'm asking because my new motor runs 200-210 all the time, even when going down the freeway when it's 50 degrees outside, or idling. I don't care about the 200-210 degree part, but I'm wondering what will happen when summer comes around. TIGER EFI - Electronic Fuel Injection for the Traditional Pontiac Engine. Heck, I would say with an inexpensive and relatively easy to R&R part like a water pump to not worry about original right now. Get what works well and fits easily.
outside differences wouldn't be too noticable anyhow and the inners not at all. And you can spend $50.00 and a couple hours when you want to sell it as numbers matching car later.. (but you wouldn't sell it right?) "Put your Finger right here"

You won't know for sure if you need the divider until you open her up and check the old one. The new ones from PY are stainless and should last a good long time if you decide to change it. I guess it all just depends on whether or not you want to have all the parts you might need on hand when you start the job. If you don't mind waiting a few days to finish the project, you can get started and order the divider after you get a look at the old one.
