I have a muncie M21 in my 73 firebird right now. But I have a feeling it's about to go... the gears grind alot, and lately it feels kinda sloppy. Should i get it rebuilt and keep the 4 speed? Or switch over to an automatic? An automatic would be kinda nice, but switching wouldn't be fun, or cheap. What do you guys think?

It really depends on what you want to do and if you will be keeping the car for awhile.
4spd Pro- better resale value, can be more fun (when everything is working properly). 4spd con- More cost, more maintenence, slower at the drags (generally speaking, there are exceptions). less consistant Auto pro- more fun to drive (especially if you use the phone or you drink a slurpee), less maintenence, less cost, more consistent and easiler to go rounds should you go to the drags. auto con- not many Steve www.pontiacheaven.org

What do you think the cost would be to switch over to an automatic? I'd have to get a new console, crossmember, shifter, etc. Plus the transmission itself. And what about the cost of getting my 4 speed rebuilt? Thanks

Joel,
Give Glenn at DGI in Mesa a call 480-830-0081 on a quote on the trans fix. Your 4spd stuff is worth more than the auto stuff. the driveshaft should be the same. the cross member shouldn't be too pricey either. Of course the consoles are hard to find in good condition for little money but, still cheaper than stick stuff. Maybe you could even find someone here on this board who doesn't live too far away who may swap you but, get some cash on the deal as the stick stuff is worth more. If you are interested in the 4 speed to auto swap. I have 2 parts cars that are auto. I think the consoles are in descent shape for drivers. I would be happy to trade you consoles and pedal assemblies. I will pay shipping. I have a 79 project that I want to start at a later date. I would love to make it a 4 speed. I would be happy to help with any parts you need to make the swap if you will give me your pedals, z-bar and clutch linkage. I have not done this swap but my cousin has. Let me know. Oh and me personally I would keep it 4 speed. Maybe now is chance to convert it to 6 speed. My email is [email protected] |

I have to say stay with the 4 speed. The grinding is usually due to a bad clutch or an adjustment of the clutch, unless you have beat the trans. Either way you cannot go wrong with a 4 speed.

I think i'm gonna keep the 4 speed. I think it definitely needs a rebuild, and not just a clutch adjustment. It's the original transmission, and has never been rebuilt. Thanks for all the input everyone.

If you plan on doing any serious drag racing then an automatic is way better for may of the reasons mentioned. But it is a lot of work and money to convert and make it look factory again. I would stay with your four speed and get a GOOD rebuild be a reputable shop unless your aiming for regular time at the strip. Besides 4 speeds are fun and cool. Tim C 65 LeMans, 3500lb.
