How much boost or nitrous can a stock, rebuilt Pontiac 400 handle. ie. cast piston and such.
Just curious as my auto parts store 400 has about 40K miles and I'm deciding what route to take to get low 12's. Thanks.

With stock cast pistons and stock rods I would not recommend using nitrous especially when you have put that many miles on it, this is a good combination for disaster.

But,,,,doesn't the Honorable Jim Hand's new book state that any Pontiac in good condition should be able to handle a 150 shot without any problems? I understand good condition to be non smoking, good compression, no hammering rods or ticking valve/lifters or any other signs of higher powered instabiity. Just my input though.

True it does but Im the type thats not willing to find that out or is able to pay for the small disaster that occurs if something does happen. To me any car that as his book stated "is in good condition" I wouldnt give a second thought to putting a 75 or even a 100 shot to but 150 is quite a bit when you stop and think about it. To me if you want to get more than just temporary gains in HP/TQ then plan out a good engine buildup that will give you exactly the gains you want and then build it. This way your only there after doing up keep maintance on the engine instead of refilling nitrous bottles and then having to fix parts that break after you juice it so many times. Just my .02 cents though....

I personally wouldnt use a 150 shot with cast pistons. A lot of variables to consider........timing, air fuel mixture, etc...
Have seen several holes in cast pistons from a 150 shot.....not necessarily caused by the 150 shot but maybe the shot plus bad timing or not enough gas.

Nitrous is an art, it is not as simple as boltig on a kit and pushing a button. Their are many variables to it. I run a staged fogger system on my race car for years. Cast pistons are usually good for a 125 shot. But the stuff is like a drug to a junkie, you will always want more, and more is as easy as a simple jet change. General rule of thumb is pull 1.5-2 degrees of timing out for every 50 hp. and use 1 range colder plug for every 100 hp. You will also need a killer ignition system, and keep it off the rev limiter. Best advise I can give you is use forged internals or you will have some really cool paper weights.

I've been using a 125 shot for two weekends of racing now on cast piston 455 with no problems. I pulled 4 deg. of timing and run a single Carter electric pump for all fuel to the engine. Picked up 6 tenths and 7 mph in the 1/8. So far so good.
