I took the 4 blade fixed fan out of my 350 FB & put in a 5 blade clutch that was found at a flea market. I bought a new GM shroud from PY and it never goes over 190' with a 180' stat regardless of heat & traffic. I think there should be room for another 1/4" on either end, but won't be able to measure until late Thurs. or Fri.

My fan measured at about 18 - 3/4", using a tape measure - s/b pretty close. The ID of the Shroud was 20". I have almost 3/4" clearance. I got the shroud from PY over 2 ys ago, original GM from what they told me. Need the clips & bolt / speed nut, not oncluded. Looks like you should be OK, you might want PY to measure the Shroud to make sure the are no areas that have a smaller ID than 20" - hard to do with the fan in place & on the car.

Schoust, I have an original shroud for my 69, 350 with air. I replace the 350 with a 400 and ever since then, I've had overheating. I can get you the shroud and fan measurements on Sat. My shroud and fan are out of the car and would be easy to measure. But you asked a question, "wondering if they used a different shroud for the 400 with air?" I would like to know that answer. Does anybody know if they used a different shroud and fan for the 69-400 with air???? Maybe this is why my 400 overheats.

This is what is in the PY Catalogue
GFE11 1967-69 Fan shroud w/V-8 (GM).............. $68.00/ea No other variations listed The 400 fire1969 may have the stamped waterpump impeller with drecreased performance or the distance from the backing plate may be too much & cavitating, needs to read George's post on this topic (novel size) and learn about some of the less visible cooling solutions. Hope this helps.

Schoust, I measured the original shroud from my 69-350 with air and it was 21" in diameter. The fan/with fan clutch measures 19 1/2". Fan blade is a 7 blade fan. Hope that helps you out.
Thanks for the info Wally. Vernon |
