More results to share with the durability of the Cometic gaskets. A couple months back I lost a piston (right before Norwalk) due to bad fuel. With the motor obviously running poorly I noticed no indications that I'd hurt the Cometic gaskets. With that in mind I cleaned off the specs of molten aluminum on the one gasket - actually put them in my tub in some lukewarm soapy water, gotta hide that stuff from the wife - and reused them when I put it back together. This past weekend I made 8 passes recording a best pass of 148mph at 3750lbs and had no issues with the gaskets sealing both compression and water. This is with a factory block and ARP head studs. I'm definitely impressed with the durability of these gaskets and thought I'd pass this on to those considering different options to better seal their cylinder pressures.

Great! - I love them here - I'd use them on my dragster if both my heads and block were not already o-ringed. We sell a bunch of them. Great product

So are you guys using these gaskets in high compression applications?

I will be tearing my engine down in about a month just to go through it. I am using 6H D's Which is better, O Ring or Cometic?

I'm mainly running on the street but when I go to the track I want to pump up the boost. I've had great luck with my Felpro 1016's up to about 12.25 to 1 but want to be safe. How much compression will the cometics safely handle?

I switched this year from copper gaskets and o-ring to cometics and no leaks at all.Motor is
15:1 compression,9.90 3600lb car,50 plus runs.I
had cylinder pressure leakage before with copper.I just put in copper o-ring wire and filed flat and smoothed finish, works great!
Cometic headgaskets are a great product. MK SR.

Dil, I'm at 8.5:1 static with 12-13lbs of boost. I was having difficutly with the FelPro's prompting the switch. If these hadn't worked I'd be o-ringing. If you'd want my opinion, I'd highly recommend them.

Supergasdil-
Don't waste your time or money on o-rings and copper. Go with Cometic. I have been using them for years on all my customer's engines and my own with zero problems and they are alot less money. They are also reusable.

I'm glad to hear about the great results with cometics. Looks like all I need to do is get the new finish on the deck and heads and I'll be set.

speaking about the finish for the block and deck...what kind of a finish does the cometics like?

Dammen8,

I'm not sure what the finish is called. Ray at Dougans showed me his new machine and it provides an ultra smooth finish. About like a vega finish in a cylinder. The finish I have now is good, but you can see the machine lines. You can also feel them.

Are any of you guys running the cometic gaskets without the mirror like finish on your surfaces?

Mark - yours went out on Friday

JC - you do not want to use them with o-rings - the gaskets are embossed. You'll need to have them filed flat. The viton coating seems to be friendly to all machined surfaces - but a bad decking is just an invite for trouble on any gasket

whats the trick for reusing gaskets? any gaskets?
Im talking about preventing peeling when removing.
Ive tried a thin film of grease and that seems to make a varnish that lets them lift off cleanly with little damage. Havent tried that on head gaskets only intakes.
Im guessing the best bet is to install head gaskets clean and dry?

Paul or Joe,
I looking to run between 18-20#s of boost thru a 9:1 motor. Which set up do you guys think would be best...an o-ring or Cometics??? Thanks.

J.C.-
As Paul said, you can't run them with o-rings. Sometimes you can mill the block carefully with the o-rings installed, and the ring will act like a filler, and then run the gasket on top. I have run gaskets of any type on the deck AFTER removing the rings, even with the grooves still in them, provided that the fire ring of the gasket surrounding the bore is closer to the bore than the groove. If the fire ring interferes with where the o-ring was, then you will have to fill it. The Cometics seal with raised embossments around the water holes and bore. If any of the embossments interefere with any holes, it will not seal. The standard type gaskets are more forgiving, so always check.

Bad69-
Cometic. You will not need to o-ring the block, run copper gaskets and receiver groove the head. The cometics work the best, and have no problem with them on crazier combinations that you will be running. They are a Multi Layered Steel (MLS) gasket, with the top and bottom coated. They do require a very smooth clean flat surface on both the heads and block to be optimum. And they do not go together with any silicone or copper spray. That actually hurts their ability to seal. Run them right out of the box, and they are reusable.

Super,
I always see hot girls and I'm certainly not afraid of them, but I've been in remission for the past 10 years...I mean married for the past 10 years. LOL

Use Cometics on my 403 Olds...12:1 and reuse them between inspection tear downs...pushing 700 horse btw...They are a little more now, BUT WELL WORTH IT!!! Cometics are fantastic!
