Hello. I bought a 67 GTO out of a heated warehouse, from the orig owner. It had 68,000 actual miles and was orginally 360 HP/4 spd. It sat for 4 years in the warehouse and it has been setting over 2 years in my back yard. The car is going to the scrapper some time this spring. My question is, the window sticker says that the rear is "SAFE-T-TRACK-HD 731". The owner said it's original. What is it and how well do they hold up after setting around that long. The fluid level was to the hole and a couple of times, I jacked it up and spun the tires, hoping that would help lube it. I have another 67 as a daily driver and was told with the factory AC, automatic, that it has a 293 rear. I tow my boat with this and drive almost 12,000 a year average. If the junker rear is a lot lower, what affect would that have for my usages? Bascially all I want to know is, are the odds that it should still be fine and what advantages/disadvantages would there be in tossing it under my driver? Thanks for your thoughts, Karl.

If its the Safety Track differential it would be the Posi rear end and very desireable to own.To find the rear end axle code you need to look at the back end of the LH axle tube. There will be a 2 letter code stamped there, you may need to sand the area and rub some white chalk across it to see it.The rear end should still be in good shape, but you need to check the brake drums to see if the brake pads have seized up on the drums and will not turn.I would take the rear end cover off and read the gear ratio on the large ring gear to be sure what ratio it has in it.

Most guys like to run a 3.08,3.23 or 3.36 gear ratio for combination highway driving and racing. The choice is yours depending on your needs and preferences.

Here is a list of 1967 GTO rear axle chart:

YB-combination 41:16...ratio 2.56
YC-comb 39:14...ratio 2.78
YD-comb 41:14...ratio 2.93
YE-comb 40:13...ratio 3.08
YF-comb 42:13...ratio 3.23
YG-comb 37:11...ratio 3.36
YH-comb 39:11...ratio 3.55
YK-comb 39:10...ratio 3.90
YL-comb 39.9....ratio 4.33

Why would you scrap a 68,000 low mileage GTO that's been stored in a heated garage? Is it in that bad of shape?

Sorry. I should have said, I bought it on Ebay as a "real nice body" ect. When I got there, the quarters were hanging straight down, the frame was rusted away and broken in several spots. The owner hated the HP and traded the 360 HP engine back at the dealer for a YC engine from a 1967 2 bbl Grand Prix. The only thing I could salvage from the exterior was the trunk lid and hood, nice chrome and windsheilds. This car was from N. Jersey and was a TOTAL rust bucket. The interior was OK but there were no floors. I took the AM/FM and all the options and sold everything else that had value to GTO people. It is on 4 wheels and that is it. If I had a sawzall, it might be worth it to take the tail panel. I believe the rear housing has YH on it. Thanks again, Karl.
