Aren't you supposed to get oil coming up through the pushrods when you prime the engine by turning the oil pump with a drill motor? I always saw oil coming up from the pushrods on to the rockers with other motors I have done? I am getting plenty of oil pressure while I prime the engine. Also the rockers look like oil is getting baked on them, like they are getting too hot. Experienced engine builders please give me feed back.

Hi Tim,
No pro here, but the last injun I primed got nothing up to the top on prime. I oiled the heck out of everything with a bottle. As soon as we fired her up there was plenty coming out of the pushrods.

If its on a stand try turning it over a few times. I did mine last night. Solid roller with T&D rocker shafts. Took about 10 minutes to get oil to all of the rockers. Once they started oiling, no problem getting it back up.

Mine took a long time to get to the top, a good ten minutes or so. Maybe need more rpm on the drill.

Jim is definately on the right track. Prime with a drill for a minute or two, then rotate the crank an eigth turn or so, prime a few minutes, then keep doing that. Sometimes the lifters need to go up and down before oil will want to come out of them. The whole procedure may take a half hour or so. -Jesse

I had a similar problem with my motor. Although I was running solid flat tappet lifters and no oil was going to the top and what I found was defective lifters and all the oil was just running out from around the top plunger and I still had decent oil pressure, the lifters were lazer brand lifters, total crap.

Also I did run the motor just to see if the rpm would help it oil while using some stock rockers and it burned and marred them up almost immediatly.

Before I installed the lifters I also let them sit in quart of oil for a few days to get them primed up. That helped get oil to the top of the engine right away.

Remember Pontiac dis. turn opposite direction?? you going right direction?? opposite from say corporate engines?? chevy?? ect???

You are turning it counter-clockwise?
Sometimes it takes a while. Try the aforementioned turning it over several time w/ the valves in different positions.
