I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I am restoring a 72 Trans am. I bought the car with the wrong engine, so I have had to find all of the original parts. I have the correct heads, intake, carb and air cleaner. The block is a 71. My question is the intake on the car is a aluminum 73 super duty intake. I recently purchased the correct 72 HO intake. The problem I am having is that the intake is not warming up fast enough. The gas is too lean and idles rough and wants too stall for the first 10 minutes. It there suppose to be some type of shielding or heat collection tray aroung the heat riser to warm the intake faster. If so does anyone know where I can get one. Also is the carb. choke coil special to this car that it would keep the carb rich awhile longer. Your help is appreciated. Thanks.

The cast iron cross over on 1972 intakes is suppose to be incased in a metal heat shield and then rivited to the aluminum intake so its not removable.

I don't think the 1972 heatshield or cross over is being reproduced. The 1971 version is. It should work, but won't be 100% correct.

The 1972 choke spring and housing is different. The 1972 was made to sit on a flat machined pad on the cross over instead of the "well" that 1971 used. The 1972 version was suppose to pull the choke off faster for less emissions.

Would anyone know where I can get the correct shield for the crossover and choke coil and rod for a 72 trans am. Thanks.

Are you sure about that? The last factory aluminum intake was the 72 HO intake - the factory 73 SD intake was cast iron.

Yes my intake is a 1973 Super Duty Aluminum intake. It was non production. The number on it is 485640. If you have the pontiac musclecar performance book by Pete McCarthy. It will show the number. It maybe the only one of it's kind. I am not sure. No doubt it was smuggled out the back door of Pontiac after they scrapped the aluminum intake for maybe cost reasons and went with the iron intake.

There was an aluminum intake available for SD 455 engines. Its very close to the 72 455 HO intake. My friend had one a few years ago. I think they were available through the parts department for a short time.

I bought the intake years ago from a man who thought it was a 72 HO intake. I have my shaker off the car and rechecked the numbers. It matches the 73 SD intake. I don't know much of the history of the intake. I never heard of an over the counter GM aluminum intake for the Super Duty at the parts department but anything is possible. It is very close to my 72 intake I just bought. If anyone knows any more of the history of the intake I would love to hear about it. One question. Does anyone know where to get the proper Choke coil and rod for a 72 HO. Any info would be appreciated. Are all 455 choke coils and rods the same. Thanks.
