I have a 67 tempest with column shift th350. My problem is that when I turn the key the starter does not crank. Heres what I know. It's a new starter that worked fine for 2 months. My voltage gauge reads 12v when the ignition is in the on position and all my dummy lights turn on. When I turn to the start position my votage gauge drops to zero and nothing happens. The selenoid does not click or anything. Tried another starter, the same thing.
Any help from the wizards of electricity would be great. |

Jumper the neutral safety switch, assumming it still has one in the circuit.
Next, check for 12v @ solenoid connection on starter when key is rotated to start position. If there is no voltage present, replace the ignition switch. It's unlikely, but possible for both solenoids to be bad. Jumper the starters off the car if they are suspect. The neutral safety switch is on the column.
I don't think it's the switch though. Did you put a new solenoid on when you changed the starter? Make sure the solenoid is wired up right. Also that the wires aren't shorting out when trying to crank. johnta1 Pontiac Power RULES !!! www.wallaceracing.com

My poblem was the same issue but was the ignition wire to the starter and a bad ground. I put in 02 size cable for the bat and a direct starter button to the ingntion wire. Alot of times the ingnition switch is old and will cause problems as well so my friend GTOKarl installed a starter button and new 02 bat cables. i know how you feel, you turn the key and noth'en... problem solved.

Johnta1,
The solenoid was changed. I installed a CVR high torque starter and it only has two posts. The big one for tha Batt and one other for the small wire (from the ignition right?). I'm a novice when it comes to auto electric. 68LeGTO, I was thinking about the ignition switch and thought about a start button like you installed. I ordered a new engine harness from M&H yeterday, so I'm waiting on that to do it all at once. I have brand new battery cables already so I'm half way there. Thanks for the info. Cheers! |

Ok,START by checking the big wire on the starter.12volts?yes,proceed.Turn ignition switch to crank position and check for power at the small(solenoid) wire.12 volts? If no,then you will be looking back at the neutral safety switch.Power(12volts) to it?Check neutral switch operation. No power?Go to ignition switch.Be back later, good luck!

I had this problem once and it turned out to be that I had just enough corrosion on my battery terminal to prevent running a heavy load like the starter.

Yep, sometimes we miss the simple, obvious things.

it was the neutral safety switch. I pulled it and bypassed it for now.
