In my engine, (one I just purchased) found during a dismantle last month. Most of the large pieces were found in the heads and valve springs. Most of the smaller pieces on the oil pump screen, at least the pump works. Metal and rubber(hard). Three guesses anyone? Anyone have an idea what would've caused this failure and how to prevent?
90% done on the rebuild and all is looking good. Sorry about the crappy PC cam pic. That's a quarter and a dime for size reference....psst I know what they are, but I thought a post like this may help others..... |

Hard to tell by the pic but might these pieces be what's left of a few positive valve stem seals?

Look like the pieces from valve seals to me too. I had some extra ones out in the tool box and went to take a look. Pretty positive (hehe) that is what they are.

Those are definately PC seal remains.
Most valve guides need to be machined lower to keep the retainers from hitting the guides/seals when using a higher lift cam. johnta1 Pontiac Power RULES !!! www.wallaceracing.com

You are correct.....and what a mess....
There wasn't a single one left in position or in any kind of decent shape. I wasn't worried about finding that garbage as I was on a rebuild mission anyway. As far as high lift cam...never heard this run prior to purchase, but I doubt cam was cause. This was a 2bbl, no go smogger, 1975/76 6x head motor. The cam wasn't wiped out, but did show its age. Most everything else is is pretty good shape and required very little work. I doubt this engine ever saw any hi-po stress, just bad gas and trying to cope with the smog/choking aspect of that era. Alot of buildup on the back of the intake valves, I have no doubt proformance was at an all time low during it's former running days. |
