When my father left for Vietnam in 1969, he removed the original 389 from his 65, replaced it with 326 and had my grandfather sell it. He still has the original motor but nothing with the car's VIN. Any thoughts on how to track it down if it is still around?

Where did your father live??? I bought my '65 in Kansas City and it had a 326 in it. The guy I bought it from said the original owner had replaced the engine. I have the original "protect-o-plate" which has the engine number on it. If you can post the engine number I'd sure like to see if it matches my car.

My father purchased it from a Baytown Pontiac dealer, outside of Houston. It was sold in Houston and, from what I've heard, was fairly well known in the Heights area. Many people who came to look at it commented on how they had seen it race and how fast it was. Of course, my grandparents knew nothing of my fathers "activities" and would say that must be thinking of another car

It was also a Fontaine Blue but I can't imagine how it would have ended up in KC. When did you purchase yours? I'll get the engine number and get back with you.

Mine is Fontaine Blue as well. However, as far as I know it was sold to V.E. Wooldridge of Kansas City. I've had it for about a year... obviously the 326 is now gone... odd though, don't you think? Let's see what the engine # tells us.

I assume that Wooldridge is the name on the POP? Did yours still have the 4 speed? I was just informed that the original 4 speed is still with the engine and a 3 speed was placed behind the 326. Also, this one had an early build date - November/December 1964.

Yes.. Wooldridge is the name on the POP. My car has a build date of 12/64 which is confirmed through PHS. It is a 4 speed car and had a 4 speed (although it was not the original) in it when I bought it. It also has a Chevy rear end which was in it when I bought it.

Quite a few coincidences! Unfortunately, without Neuman on the POP, I'm afraid that's all it is - a coincidence

I'll still get the engine number, just to make sure.

I do not think there is any way to verify the engine # to a '65 GTO. They did not match to the VIN back then. I am unclear if PHS can match the engine ID # to the VIN but I don't think so. My PHS doc's do not have the engine ID# just the engine code which is WS. I suppose there is the possibility that the guy I bought it from put a different POP in the car. He told me he was the 2nd owner (actually I think he said the 3rd but he bought it from a family member of the original owner). If you have a WS engine and matching tranny and you cannot find the car I might be interested in purchasing the combo from you depending on the block casting date on the engine block.

Even after all this time, I doubt very seriously that he would want to part with it. He took it out of the car because of all all the work and money he had invested. He mentioned to me in passing that if I could find the body, I could have the motor - I'll make him regret that offer!! Of course, owning a GTO would be a step down from my SS 396

I couldn't resist giving y'all a hard time. I was looking for a GTO when I happened across my '69 Chevelle back in 1986. I just about have it completely disassembled for a frame off restoration. When I finish this I might take over my fathers work on a 65 GTO convertible project that he started 20+ years ago!

I have a 69SS 396 and a 65 GTO, it would be a toss up as to which one I like the best. A step down, no, they're both great gm cars.

Nueman... OK, I admit it I'm a dumba$$... I looked at my POP a bit closer and saw that the VIN is on there as well. I guess altzhiemers is starting to set in.....

I remember now that I compared it to the VIN on the car when I bought it and they matched. The number for the engine that is supposed to be in my car is WS 116532. So, if you post the engine number for your car and someone has the POP they can get you a match..... sorry about the mistake... I guess I'm just getting old.

Is it possible to get do a title search from your state?I Know Mo doest do them anymore.(privacy)((((usede to live there)The other thing is if they would still have old car insurance records.May have VIN.After buying my mom and dads '66 GTO in '82and fixing it up I sold it in '89 but kept the pro-tect-o plate.I used it to find the new owner 4 years later.

Yes and no. You can request a title history in Texas but you need, at least, the VIN and cannot go back to the 1969 registration but must work your way back from the current owner. I would need to have more info on the current owner/registration. If I had that, I wouldn't need to do a title history.

FYI - The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) has purged records of cars that have not been titled since around 1988. I found this out the hard way on my Chevelle. In trying to find previous owners, I ordered a title history but the only record returned was for the previous owner. Unfortunately, the previous owner was my mother as I was a minor at the time of purchase!! Luckily, the dealer where we purchased the car was still around and I contacted them for, hopefully, more information. The owner's wife explained that they had moved, had a fire, had their roof blown off in a storm and had been throwing out old records but she would look and for me to call back tomorrow. When I called, she said that I was "the luckiest guy in the world". She had pulled my file over the weekend and thrown it in the garbage. If I had not called THAT DAY, it would have gone out in the trash. To make a long story short (too late) I was able to contact the 2nd owner (I being the 4th) but he was unable to recall the name of the first owner, but I digress.

Wow!

I was able to get a title search about 10 years ago on my parents '66 GTO.At that time they they give you ALL of the people that had titled the car.Mo went back to '68,I was the 8th owner.(owned the car twice)The quality of the photocopy was poor but you got the copy of the title form the people filled out.So you got the name address,mileage and what the people payed for the car.
