I need to replace the tires on my 65 GTO. I am currently running 215/60r15s all the way around.
WHat tires do y'all recommend? I am looking at a set of B.F.Goodrich radial comp T/As but am open to suggestions.
I have a set of rallye 1 with redline tires that I put on on rare occassions but I don't want to run them all the time.
I put about 3,000 miles ayear on the car.

Personally, I think 215/60/15's would be too short (25.2").

I'd recommend something over 26" tall myself.

215/65 or a 235 (both 26.1") or 245/60 (26.6") would do the trick on a 15" rim.

Factory was about 26.5".

I personally don't like the white letter tires on our cars - I would go with either a redline radial (they are available in the sizes I listed) or blackwall in a real sticky tread compound (at 3,000 miles per year, who cares about long tread life - the tires will dry rot before we wear them out... ).

I run BFG TAs too. 245/60R/15s on the back, 235s on the front. 26.25" tall.

I had a set of coopers on a daily driver once. Liked them.

you can have the tires mounted with the blackwall facing out. Although, it's cool to have "BF Goodrich Radial TA" showing.

I have a '65 GTO, too but it has 215/70/R14 Goodyear Eagle ST on Rally 1's. It came this way when I purchased the car a year ago and these tires are old.

Have you looked at Coker tires?

I am interested in replacing them and looked at www.coker.com and saw they have:

I am probably going to drive about 3,000 miles a year, also.

Are these the correct size that would have come on my '65? Is the Red Line the right size? Can I move up to a 225/75R14 on the rims I have?

The 215/75/14 is right around the original height.

You may want to check out Diamondback Classics Redlines also.

They have a 225/70/14 that would be close to the "correct" height also.

Several members have put the Diamondbacks on, and I haven't seen one negative comment.

Have Kelly Chargers on my '71. Absolutely cannot wait to get rid of them. The absolute worst thing I ever did was put those tires on my car. Going back to BFGs.

I have good luck with bias ply tires on my 67 GTO. B.F.Goodrich Silvertown on the front, and ProTrac on the back. If it worked in the 60s, why shouldnt it work now? Good Stuff-Jesse

Champ, what tires would be "sticky" with low tread life?

I also run 215/70/14 Cooper GT radials on 14x7 rally I's. No problems and they seem to wear well. Not real sticky but I have run them at the track as well.

I am looking for new sneakers for the Crager S/S that I just bought. Doing a lot of studing on Tire Rack and the Firestone Indy 500 are the widest and highest rating for dry traction. The Dunlop GT Qualifier are a close second for dry traction but they are not as wide.

There are a lot of things to consider when purchasing tires. You have to be aware of tread wear ratings, sidewall stiffness, the flatness of the tread, speed rating etc. It's also a good idea to check out as many reviews as you can. For me the decision came down to either Dunlop qualifier or Yokohama Avid S/T. The Avid tires are superior but it really came down to availability, size, and price so I went with the Dunlops.

Having run just about most of the tires listed I would stay away from the dunlop. I like the Avid S/T and the Firestone SS series. Both have good looks but the nod to traction and handling goes to the Avid. Mileage and wet/snow traction to the Firestone. I put 40,000 plus miles on a set of Firestones on my 70 GP. Just my two cents.

Best tire made bar none. Make sure you read the reviews and survey results. If you get caught in the rain, you will LOVE these tires. No hydroplaning what so ever.

A good tire to be sure but the treadwear probably indicates that it sticks to the road like shellack but wears out quickly.

Well, if I was buying tires for a daily driver, I'd worry about treadlife. But for my old cars, that isn't an issue.

Too bad that Firestone doesn't come in the optimum sizes for most of our cars.

Of course, there really aren't many high performance 15" tires in the correct sizes.

That tirewear thing is BS. I have owned 3 sets of the SZ50's and I put 25K on one set, 15K on another and 10K on another and they all showed the same kind of wear, basically nothing. Keep them at hte right pressure and move them front to back every 5K miles and you will have no problems at all.

I run BFG Radial T/As on both my 66 GTO and 68 Camaro and I love 'em! For the GTO I use 235/60/R15 (front) and 245/60/R15 (rear). No clearance issues and they hold the road! I love the way they steer. And I like the look. Just my .02
